Every change to the site brings about a familiar round of blogs, commentary and artwork.  Here's a compilation of our version changes throughout the years with accompanying artwork I've collected (from all sides).

We loves you deviantART v7 by SaTaNiA Version 7 Tutorial - V7 by TimberClipse
dA V7 Rules by KillboxGraphics :thumb164534583:

Things to take note of:

:bulletred: Breathe
:bulletred: Criticism is expected and desired so long as it's constructive. Screaming at people and calling them names is not what being part of a community is about.  If the administration berated your artwork you would take offense. The work we do on this site is our passion, it is OUR artwork - be mindful and respectful in your criticism.  Real people are on the other side of the screen.
:bulletred: History proves that despite not liking change, we learn to adapt and embrace it.
:bulletred: deviantART does love you.

Enjoy the trip down memory lane and think about how far we've come.

Love it or hate it, it's been quite a wild ride thus far and I'm looking forward to the future.

I loved version 5 and version 6, they remind me of when i first found the site.

brings back a lot of memories, and, I don't know, it just felt more homely. I'm not too keen on this version, they've veered away from that kind of approach, in my opinion.

oh well :) i wonder what version 8 will be like...

v6 is still my favorite. It reminds me of when I first joined.

Mt only complaint; The dA logo at the top left has steadily shrunken... It'd be great to make it larger
Kieranfoy Featured By Owner Jun 20, 2010
Give me a break! dA doesn't love anyone, and simply dismissing the complaints as being kneejerk shows a distinct lack of intellectual honesty, IMO.

THIS DESERVES A :iconbwavoplz: I can just imagine all thoose people screaming "I WANT V7 BACK!"
Kweh-chan Featured By Owner Jun 12, 2010  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Ah, how I miss V4! V7 doesn't even deserve mentioning. I see a website that has slowly become more plastic and cheap-looking over the years, and as such, become more cowardly when confronted with excessive criticism. At least you gave us our search bar back...

My philosophy: Don't fix what ain't broke.
sisterjatt Featured By Owner Jun 11, 2010
I love this article so much. *hugs article*

People need to chill. Seriously. Look at the layout objectively and pretend you never saw v6 or something. And, look! They stuck a search bar up there! Gotta count for something 8D
claxis Featured By Owner Jun 3, 2010  Hobbyist General Artist
To tell the truth, I'd be the happiest person in the world if I could still use version 5. xD Old fashioned, who?

While something overflowed with content would be awful, this current layout is way too empty in my opinion. :\ I'm having an EXTREMELY hard time to figure out how to delete items from my "Messages" page, and it actually took me quite some time to find the "Add to favourites" button. :T It lacks... practicity? Besides, it looks too wide on the screen. And do I feel the ads increasing? D:

You've done a good job, though, even if it actually doesn't please me all that much. ^^'
Oh, right, maybe I should just stop complaining now. xD

The bugs in V7 can be worked out and it will still suck ass
Slayer-1412 Featured By Owner May 27, 2010  Hobbyist General Artist
 the bugs will be worked out eventually, so version 7 will be awesome until those programmers can think of more amazing things for version 8 :wow:

Greatness! This made my day. I've already gotten used to the changes, and I don't mind it so much now.
Za-Baka-Ookami Featured By Owner May 25, 2010
That comic is so true. But I believe that people will going around smacking each other on the head when V8 comes out yelling, "COULD OF HAD A V8"

Looking back at the old versions makes me like v7 more. I think I didn't like it at first because I was blaming my computer's lagging on it, which wasn't true. The older versions do look cool, but also look a little blocky or misplaced. I believe v7 looks more sleek and up-to-date.

Rofl that made my day :P

I was actually so happy about the change from v5 to v6! v6 was so easy to use, it looked very professional, and it was convenient. I loved the new upgrades from v5, and I thought that that version would have lasted a while, but it didn't. v7 is complete with hard-to-find gadgets, and doesn't look quite as good as v6. I thought that v6 was the best version we had - I've been around dA for a long time (not just on this account, but others as well throughout the years). v7 was a bit of a downgrade, and I am wondering how it has really improved. What I noticed was the frequency of drop-down tabs, instead of being out in the open, the lack of a search bar expect for the first page, and the general appearance. I thought that v6 was, really, much more professional looking. I've been having technical problems with this version, and the only thing I saw as an improvement was being able to comment right below the picture as opposed to scrolling the length of the page down to the bottom. Little, but it is much more convenient. Still, the bads outweigh the goods for this version, sadly. ):

Holy crap, I totally remember mosaics! :omg: Those seem like a really weird idea now, but I had lots of fun with those.
dragon-shadow Featured By Owner May 25, 2010
& it will happen all over again when non DA related websites update themselves & you guys feel the need to 'upgrade' to pointlessly try to keep up for no reason, or you get bored, need to waste some money ........

It's not like this version was even a huge change which kinda makes it more annoying. So many bugs & little pointless changes that people don't like for what? So it can be said the DA had a shiny new upgrade only recently? That it's keeping up with the big boys? Whatever.

Personally I find the changes pointless & annoying, it's going to be interesting when my subscription runs out, I can then see all the things that the non-subscribers have been moaning about as well. Good job I have found a much better alternative to DA to use as a place to actually show off my art, DA will do so I don't have to bother setting up a Facebook account.

Well no matter the many angry beavers rant and rave, I still hold true that deviantART is a wonderful artistic site; the best even. I thank the admins and founders for being so quick and diligent to continue improving and listening with an open-minded to us many deviants.

This show of change and growth make me proud to have stayed so long. :]

I just wanted to say that you forgot a pic that you may have forgotten to included in the article, here it is:

I have always thought that if you are going to talk about something you ought to talk about all the sides and opinions. I have my opinion but that is not what I wanted to talk about in this comment, but based on the URL I have provided I am fairly sure you can guess what it is.
MsAsharah Featured By Owner May 24, 2010  Student Artist
Ok I can use Ver7 no problem. I hate it but I can understand that Da is changing.
But come back view of deviation! This new sucx! We can see only blur blur and more blur! Good pic look terrible when you use view or full view. Someone was stupid to make it this way. Look to someones gallery and tell me what do you see? Blur? And more blur? Really? How sad... And people think that they rocx because they make supa-dupa ver7 and dont want hear critic.
Please think moment and come back old version of view a deviation.
My eyes hurts when I see this blur. We arent photoshop children ><
New version should be better but this option is really stupid.

Please think about it and maybe make option to come back this option to ver6.

I've tried to *like* this for the fact that *maybe* I can tide over until V8(PRAY it works better) But all that;s been done (Updates fixes whatnot) Has made in my opinion a uninspirational idea worse. This new dA screams cheap/money/popular/assimilated/massmedia. But it's not cheap because now we pay for things that were free etc.

In short I think I'm disgusted and revoulted in such a level that I can't even formulate a response that aply descibes it. *sigh* Now let me go lag my way to browsing again to the fuzzy hacked pictures with their nifty ad feces plastered next to them.

I addressed some of my concerns in much more polite terms, but the things that I had brought up I think were dismissed?

interestingly enough my pro art friend who is in the biz hates da 7. but mainly cause of the art zoom feature. he felt that whining about it would make it go away. it didn't as i had predicted his energy was not as well spent as a man in his position should spend it. needless to say he isn't happy but i am happy to see that da is commited to the changes it makes and has more planned. because in the end these changes were enevitable and i personaly love the time this whole new layout saves for a busy artist like me.

keep on trucking da as i support you on the work you do.

Wait a minute.. this is an official response? Wow... really?

If you are listening to us do not take two steps backward and allow someone to post something like this.

I'm neutral myself. I don't hate the changes, some things are interesting and it looks slick but some issues like the 30 seconds full view loading is a definite issue that cannot be ignored let alone thrown back in your face.

That is why people make such comments. And from what I see from this and anything OTHER "positivity" post, you're encouraging people to flame anyone who has anything critical to say labeling people as a baawwwlers.

You are encouraging people to continue insulting, flaming and hating on others. And so long as they love dA they're in the right. Those who "baww" as you put it have rarely insulted any single person more than the design itself. They're rarely tossed a bone and yet they continue not insulting individual people. However, those who voraciously defend dA from everything, pitchforks and all flame those who even have a tiny thing to talk about.

Here's the truth, the people dA think hates them probably loves dA more than they "love" them in return.

Especially since they stick around all the insults dA encourages other people to hurl at them.

If you want to believe criticism is important, don't post up funnies making fun of critics.

You're only making more enemies.

I posted a comic another deviant created and I posted a bunch of Anti version artwork as well from people who were totally not into the updates as well as some pro ones. This isn't an official "OMG You guys suck for not loving us" response.

I'm a member of this community I have been for many years and I have faced site upgrades and giant changes as a member of the community, as a volunteer and as a paid staff member. This need to denounce my opinion, feelings or thoughts because I'm one of "them" is just as ridiculous as saying those people who don't like change suck which is not at all what I said.

I laugh at myself as much as I laugh at this community as much as I laugh at our administration because frankly we are laughable at times and finding humor can be healing when we're going through difficult to understand times and that was the point of this post. To show you where we have come from, to find some humor and to connect as one but apparently that point got missed by some and totally understood by others.

I apologize if you see this as offensive, I see myself as part of the community apparently you see me as something else. That's unfortunate, I only know deviantART as a whole not a division.

I hope you have seen the official updates on v7 including the last journal by #hq which seeks to address some of the bigger community concerns.

All the best,
cutiepuhtootie Featured By Owner May 23, 2010
I have been a Deviant for three long years, and as the changes come up, I say they get worse and worse. I truly prefer either V5 or V6, both of which I was here for. Despite the fact that I have gotten used to this new layout, it makes my blood boil that an administrator basically told me to either like it of fuck off. He may not have said that in that exact content, but believe me, the way he said it was very insulting.

"If you don't like it you can either A) leave, or B) get used to it"

THAT is pretty much the message I have received from these people. And what he said SO wasn't an ass-holy remark

Anyway, I refuse to waste more of your time with my consistent babbling. All I will say now is that I renounce V7. ENTIRELY.
Moonbeam13 Featured By Owner May 24, 2010  Hobbyist Photographer
I'm sorry you received a commentary like that, that certainly wasn't the message of this article it was merely a compilation of where we have come from and I hope you saw it as such. I also hope you have seen the latest journals from #dt and #hq that list the recent updates and what we are working on.

lol, how true is that comic? XD Honestly, I don't see why people have to bitch all the time about every little change. Maybe you guys (the admins) should starting popping over to the galleries of those who moan before giving it a chance and do the same to them. Except, like you said, that's not what dA's all about.

Well, as always, the change is a bit of a shock to the system, but change is good and (especially in the internetty world) necessary. I like that things are hidden until you actually need them. Nice job, guys!

Well they could atleast leave it to where you can see instead of just deviantWATCH messages and feedback messages, maybe they can make the message preview like V6 but with the V7 look to where it says Comments, Replies, Activity, Deviations, and Correspondence

Version six would have to be my favourite but version seven does have some good things.
What I find is hard is DA gives us all these cool new things but they are the first things to go when the next version comes out. Bring on version eight! Hopefully they'll keep all the things people like for a change.
