Witches of East End Contest

Tue Jul 15, 2014, 2:01 PM

Illustrate an Edgar Allan Poe scene, story, or element from "The Tell-Tale Heart," "The Black Cat," or "The Raven" that you would expect to see in the world of The Witches of East End. The winning work will be displayed in an episode of the series perhaps as a picture, book illustration, tarot card, or some other fanciful way chosen by the creative team of the show.

Edgar Allan Poe was a master of the mysterious and the macabre. The witches of East End would certainly indulge in the study of the master. Re-familiarize yourself with these three classic Edgar Allan Poe stories and absorb the context for the world of The Witches of East End.

Based on Melissa de la Cruz's New York Times best-selling novel, Witches of East End centers on the Beauchamp family, where in season one sisters Freya and Ingrid discovered they are witches with ancient magical powers. With the help of their mother Joanna and Aunt Wendy, they learned how to cultivate their craft and work together to defeat unearthly enemies seeking revenge on their family, while keeping their abilities a secret from the town.

This season, with the portal to Asgard open, what comes through will forever change the lives of the Beauchamps. Darkness surrounds East End as a new stranger arrives. Joanna is still weak with poison in her blood as the Beauchamps search desperately for a cure. With the death of Penelope, Killian and Dash's warlock powers return. #DarknessIsRising

I think they trust people when filling out a profile to be accurate in stating.

I do not mind losing to a minor as a person but it is more of legal issue minimum age.

Next time try to post the original size setting that is sure fire way to meet the pixel rule.

If something like that does happen, no matter what, you have to show proof of id. So there is no way around it.

Never worry if you win or not, if you've created what you wanted and are happy with what you have done that's really all that matters, what other think is always good but if you follow your own way things will work out and if they don't then you did what you felt was right and in that you will always feel like you have won.

less then 900 submissions, hmmm surprised at that number, thought there would be more. Ive done about 5 of these DA co-sponsored contest now, so crazy how the winners are picked. No matter how well you think you know who will and who wont place, it always ends up not who you think it is or should be...then the chain of compliant notes show up :crash: . Oh the things people say lol :pc: swore i would stop doing these...they eat up so much time :shakefist:! any who, good luck to all! ( :shh: my entries are in here, if you want to see them click my profile) also curious..anyone besides me start watching the show thanks to this contest? its kind of the point for it after all....

Short run, and it's summer so I think maybe people are busy on summer vacation. October would be a good time for this contest, but then it wouldn't promote the show during airing.

As far as the winners I can tell you as an ex art director it's never what you think because people do not know the full criteria for inserting the art in to the show. It's just a matter of what will work. It could be colors, it could be style, or it can simply be contrast. The art director has to go with what will work best for the show, not what is the best quality art. Lots of artists miss this point when they submit work for jobs. Don't give them your best, give them what they ask for! In this case they didn't really give much direction. It would have been nice to know what scene it was going to be in to help design the art specifically for the scene.  I can't tell you how many times I went through submissions, and thought "This is amazing art! To bad we can't use it because it doesn't work with our theme/concept."

I've been watching the show since it premiered. It's not my favorite show but it is entertaining. I wish the show had more style/design put in to it with lore and such. I don't see much art direction in it which is what is lacking to me. There is not one piece of lore in the show that I can point at and say "That is so Witches of East End." Nothing original anyways, which is what made this challenge difficult. There is not much to go on. I watched the whole first season looking for a style to mimic, but didn't find any real design patterns. I'm guessing they will go with something that looks similar to the artwork in the spell books, but again you never know what they need it for so who knows.

I don't know why anyone would opt out of a fun contest like this, or get upset over it. I will enter every contest like this they have. I wish they would do more. It's exciting. You can win money, and get great exposure. If you loose you still win because you've created art that can still be sold, and added to your portfolio. I don't really see the downside.

I just won a contest yesterday so I am still high from that win...hah

I thought the total number of entries was odd too.  Could be because the contest ran for less than 2 weeks.

Since what the judges like and what I like don't seem to match either,  I went ahead and submitted my entries for the Raven even though I didn't like it as much as my entry for The Tell-Tale Heart.  Maybe they'll think the opposite as me and really like my Raven entry. LOL.

Unfortunately there are laws that prohibit them from entering people under 18. I am sure they would have liked to. On the upside your young, and have plenty of competition ahead of you!

lol prize money, anything with prize money has to be over 18 to receive the money as a winner, among "other" things.

I know right?! Even though I'm over 18 I still feel there were too many rules regarding the content. There's all these restrictions on a contest that is based on macabre themes and stories that actually feature quite a bit of gore and violence (especially "The Black Cat".)  It's rather deflating, lol.
