NVIDIA® teamed up with deviantART to challenge you to help us explore the digital divide, and answer this simple question: What does it mean to Speak Visual™?
THE RESULTS
After much deliberation and cogitation, the results are in! Winners were selected from the 50 semi-finalists by a judging panel consisting of David Wright, Creative Director, NVIDIA and Fabio Costa, Creative Director, Cutwater, a creative agency out of San Francisco. The judges' decision was based on Visual Impact (40%), Originality (20%), Technical Skill (20%) and the How does my art Speak Visual essay component (20%).
- Digital painting utilizes traditional painting techniques, such as oil or watercolor, through the digital tools like graphics tablets and stylus pens to create images directly into a computer.
"Speaking visually is a language used by many but only really practiced by few. People tend to communicate to each other with sounds and images which appeal to an individual's conscious mind, the birth of thoughts and ideas. A painting cannot be fully described and appreciated with a thousand words but just a single image on its own can tell a whole story and more."
In addition to getting $1,300 in American Express gift cards, a deviantART Artist Bag and a 1-year deviantART subscription, kamixbeat will have her winning piece showcased at the NVIDIA® Speak Visual™ Show to be held during SXSW 2009 in Austin, Texas. She and a companion will be flown to Austin, where they will receive a complimentary two-night hotel stay during the event. The winner will also receive a sweet Alienware® Area-51® m15×15.4" Notebook Computer!
Congratulations to kamixbeat!
Congratulations to each of our finalists, who will be receiving $1,300 in American Express gift cards, a deviantART Artist Bag and a 1-year deviantART subscription!
- Vector art produces images through the utilization of mathematical equations to represent geometric forms such as points, curves, polygons and lines.
"I was inspired… to devise an instrument that 'translates' the octave of music to the spectrum of light and communicates the eight levels of human consciousness (intangible) through the visual light spectrum now represented in a tangible pure form: Speaking visual."
- Fractal Art… This abstract variety of digital art uses fractal geometry through the use of algorithms to render spectacular forms which often evoke the realm of fantasy.
"Fractals are the very essence of the visual while being the essence of sound as well. They form the perfect merge between the two."
- Pixel Art makes use of raster graphics software to create images on a pixel-by-pixel level in miniscule detail.
"One could choose to see the logo as an actual claw (hence its name) such as that of a robot or some mechanical alien hand. Or one could even take it a step further and interpret the "claw" as something entirely different, such as… oh, say a zen shrine…"
Learning to Speak Digitally
- 3D art emphasizes the creation of art that scales to the Cartesian coordinates (X,Y,Z) on a 2D digital canvas. Such items include 3D renders from a 3D program, or art where 3D depictions account for the majority of the artwork.
"The digital age has given artists new freedom to express their work… for the use of digital tablets and paint simulation programs gives them the ability to paint on their computer just as they normally would in real life. Through three-dimensional modeling programs, whole worlds can be made to explore…"

Interpretations are fun and challenging, and it gives people an opportunity to get to know other artists personally through their work as well as common communication. In fact visual language goes deeper on a personal level, where one may discover thoughts and personal perceptions of an artist that has not been made known verbally, but visually expressed. Such as dilemas, feelings, fetishes, dreams, inspirations, reflections, and beliefs. Visual language among the community of artist is an intimate, or personal language that can be well respected and understood by the beholder who studies and interpret the art works. Through visual language, we introduce eachother our own world, and thus we dive deep into visual explorations, discovering all the wild things that our imaginations has produce from experience.
Interestingly enough, our real world is also an art museum, down to our own anatomy and our complicated system that keeps us alive and kicking. As a Christian, I believe that God is our artist as well as the author of our life. Only difference is that we have free will.
Generally every design, every form, has a purpose, just as we artist draw a character or an object to communicate our purpose to the beholder. Visual language is one that we really have to keep alive on DA.
Since the time I first joined DA, I thought I was the only person who actually interprets art works. But, I'm sure I can't be the only one. I hope I meet others who shares the same interest in visual language. This is how we can really get along with one another as a community of artist. Not through popularity but from acknowledging any work. Any art work is an artist's way of saying that they are alive and they exist. Art is the evidence of our existance, and our personal identity. We draw not only for the passion but also to make ourselves known as individuals. Thus, the reason why we post our works for public display here on DA. Pretty cool huh?
