Movember

About Movember

During November each year, Movember is responsible for the broken relationships between men and their razors.  Donning their mustaches, these men raise vital funds and awareness for men's health - specifically prostate cancer.

Since its humble beginnings in Melbourne, Australia, Movember has grown to become a truly global movement inspiring more than 1.9 Million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas to participate with formal campaigns in Australia, New Zealand, the US, Canada, the UK, South Africa, Ireland, Finland, the Netherlands, Spain, Denmark, Norway, Belgium and the Czech Republic. In addition, Movember is aware of Mo Bros and Mo Sistas supporting the campaign and men’s health cause across the globe, from Russia to Dubai, Hong Kong to Antarctica, Rio de Janeiro to Mumbai, and everywhere in between.

No matter the country or city, Movember will continue to work to change established habits and attitudes men have about their health, to educate men about the health risks they face, and to act on that knowledge, thereby increasing the chances of early detection, diagnosis and effective treatment.

In 2011, over 854,000 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas around the world got on board, raising $126.3 million USD.

Big steps have been taken towards changing attitudes and habits relating to men’s health around the world, but there is still much to be done to catch up with the women’s health movement. Via the moustache, Movember aims to fulfill its vision of having an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health by continuing to spark conversation and spread awareness of men’s health issues each year.

Donation Information

The funds that Movember raise are invested in programs that address the strategic priorities Movember has identified, related to both prostate and testicular cancer.

Globally, fighting prostate cancer continues to be Movember’s highest priority. There are still many issues to be addressed, particularly when it comes to diagnosis - a key focus for many Movember funded research programs. Today, there still isn't a test that accurately tells a man which type of prostate cancer he has, resulting in many men being over-diagnosed and having to undergo unnecessary and harmful treatment. Equally important to Movember are Survivorship programs. Diagnosis is just the first step in a man's prostate cancer journey; Survivorship is the next and these programs can have a dramatic impact on the quality of life of men and their families and carers; they can mean the difference between men living a meaningful, quality life and just living.

In Australia, New Zealand and Canada, male mental health is our other priority area. As a community we are only now beginning to fully understand the devastating impact and cost of mental illness. The loss of life, particularly young men’s lives, as a result of depression is disturbing. For men living with depression, being able to fully participate in work and family activities is often a great challenge.

The funds raised are directed to programs run directly by the Movember Foundation and our men’s health partners in each country. Together, the channels work to ensure that Movember funds are supporting a broad range of innovative, world-class programs in line with our strategic goals, in the areas of Awareness & Education, Survivorship and Research.

With funds raised by the Movember community, we're working hard to have a real impact.

A Personal Message

I annually raise money and awareness for Women's health and I'm proud of those efforts but after reading the statistics and understanding the Movember movement, I am all in.  This movement needs voices and action and I love the idea behind the moustache because it adds a sense of humor to the otherwise embarrassing topic of Prostates and Mental Health.  However, I find some hesitation to participate because spouses or girlfriends are unsupportive of the 'grow a moustache' movement and I have heard everything from threats to outright refusal for their significants to participate.

The next part of what I'm about to say is to those women. I will pause for a minute while you gather them so they can read this.

I have spent two decades of my life and have personally raised over $80,000 to raise awareness and support research to save all of your womanly parts.  Your boyfriend, spouse, casual fling, is making a pledge to ensure that we help raise awareness and support research to protect their manly parts and those of your brothers, your fathers, your sons and your nephews.  If you can't get over the 'stache' for a month and rally to support your man, you should be ashamed of yourself. Growing facial hair for a month should not end a relationship, dying from Cancer on the other hand, most certainly does.

For the rest of the women out there, there are a whole lot of sensitive, caring and supportive men who are participating in this event and need your love, care and attention.  If you see someone with a weird moustache during November, I encourage you to smile at them and cheer them on.

Let's be clear on the facts:

In Canada
:bulletred: 1 in 7 Canadian men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer -  the most common cancer among Canadian men
:bulletred: 26,500 Canadian men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2012
:bulletred: On average, 73 Canadian men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every day.
:bulletred: On average, 11 Canadian men die from the disease every day.

In the United States
:bulletred: About 241,740 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed
:bulletred: About 28,170 men will die of prostate cancer
:bulletred: 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime.

These numbers are unacceptable.  Did you know that each Movember moustache grown in 2011 sparked a total of 2,413 conversations around men’s health? Those are conversations that absolutely need to happen! So let's support our men and stand behind their silly stache's! Just like they stand behind us when we support things they don't fully understand.

We're supporting Movember and imploring you to do the same
