Anyone know if the finalists were posted anywhere? I know they posted the finalists for the Insidious 2 contests, and that contest came out after this one.

It's really a privilege to be able to hop online and connect with thousands of other artists. Seeing the diversity in ideas here is a lot of fun for me, and it's an honor to be able to compete. Thanks, and good luck everyone.

Apologies. The parentheses broke the links. Here are the links to the six traditional media pieces I found among the semi-finalists.

Polymer Clay - [link]
Mixed Media Sculpture - [link]
Gouache on Illustration Board - [link]

Seriously. It's not like the semi-finalists included work that was work done in pencil ([link], polymer clay ([link], mixed media sculpture ([link], or gouache on illustration board ([link]! Oh wait....

:iconmandem:

Forgot to include two more traditional art entries: A painting on canvas ([link], and a mixed media sculpture ([link].

That makes 15% traditional media. That's likely comparable to the percentage of digital vs. traditional media entries (that also followed all rules), just from glancing over all of the contest entries.

Kudos to the judges for giving traditional art pieces props in this contest.... and to the artists for submitting such amazing traditional art pieces!

I'm surprised that the guy listed above to pick the final 4 is in Canada when the entrants had to be in the US.

:iconmandem:
mandem Featured By Owner Jul 11, 2013
Eh, apples to oranges. The US thing had to do with the fact that the sponsor --Truth(r)-- is an American group whose funding was created by a lawsuit against major tobacco corporations and is specially earmarked to help reduce youth smoking in America. My guess is that this contest is equally aimed at spreading the "info" to young participants on Deviant Art and at generating something for advertising. Limiting the contest to US participants gives an increased guarantee that US youth will see it, and that the advertisement will be relevant to US youth.

Meanwhile, the judge is a justifiably popular artist in the field (his comics get millions of hits in the US and Canda) and he's also a regular deviant... his nationality is irrelevant to the funding or the agenda of the sponsors, and irrelevant to his massive popularity among alternative youth culture.... so why shouldn't they pick someone who is clearly in touch with the standards of target community? *shrug*

Eh, popular smopular.

Normally it's the sponsor that picks the winners from the pool of semi-finalists. And since the "truth" is the sponsor (and based in the US), that was my point. After all, dA even gave the sponsor a dA page here [link]

Although I think the whole urea/methane debate of fact distortion in the contest announcement page may have scared him/her away.

To be honest I wasn't that surprised to not get picked (was even told I didn't have a chance), but it does still upset me a little.:iconlazycryplz:

But you win some, you lose some, you just gotta pick your stuff up and go try again, which I plan to do . \/ .

It's an honor to be one of the finalists and completely agree with ~mandem

I face this contest without thinking it was one. If my work is enough to make someone think twice before smoking, then I will feel that I actually create something that truly means something.

Congratulations to everyone!

Seems they preferred the more obvious depictions, rather than the deep ones that 'made you think'.

Well, good on ya. They're all well drawn, and one of my 5 fav pics got up there. :D

Somewhat pathetic that people are hating on the winners regardless of medium and claiming they (themselves) "should have won" because they spent time or their piece and/or it had personal meaning to them... guess what ? We all spent a good deal of time on our submissions, they just didn't meet the criteria as well as the finalists. So STOP hatin' and start creatin'!!! Back to the drawing board, literally. Congrats to the finalists!

"Stop hatin' and start creatin'" That's so going to be my new personal motto. I feel my art has improved a lot since I learned to let go and accept that rejection is necessary. It's part of the learning experience.

Hmmm, my entry didn't make the semi-finalist list. On the other hand, I did make a sale from it on my gallery at Fine Art America. Here is my entry: [link]

Congrats to all of the semi-finalists! I don't envy the judges having to make the choices. So many terrific entries to choose from!
