On the heels of our 12th Birthday, I've looked back at the projects that my team have undertaken and realized that in the last year, especially, the deviantART community has stepped up and helped to make projects like #projecteducate and #ArtHistoryProject successful. KickFlip for the Cause WinnersThe deviantART Community was challenged to create a skate deck design for one of the four bands that will be shredding up the stage at this Summer's Vans Warped Tour and support the work of Boarding for Breast Cancer and once again the community ROCKED IT!
We want to thank the bands, Blessthefall, Breathe Carolina, Piercethe Veil and Tonight Alive for taking the time to judge the decks!
Check out which decks the bands felt tuned into their sound the best.

Over the past few months, we've been diligently working on cleaning up the category tree of old and unused categories. While most of this will go unnoticed by the community, what you will notice is the change from "Miscellaneous" galleries to "Other". The reason for this change is simple. The concept of Miscellaneous leads one to believe that it's a junk drawer category for everything under the sun when the intention was to be an "Other" category for deviations that don't fit well in other sub-categories of the tree. In the news this week there has been a spotlight on Karren Brady, a photographer who has won a copyright ruling. The news article itself is interesting but the cautions that it turfs up for the future and current generations of photographers are slightly more concerning. The general feeling that has started to develop is that if you have assistance with setting up a shot, making a scene, posing a model and making up a person for example, those people may well have rights to your work. I read a very interesting article this week debating Photography Vs Literature and which one of the two tells us more. Of course there is always the element that a picture could be accompanied by words but neither aspect is enough to tell a whole story. But as the article says, Photography has become a universal constant in the world today and is accessible to nearly everybody. Yet many still believe that only pure narration can truly tell a story. What are your thoughts? As Photographers we can choose to limit what we tell or show with a photograph, we can even mislead. Can we convey more with words? Or more with an image? You could describe a person with words but never truly give an accurate picture of who they are visually without a photograph...

Basking in the glory of finally getting recognised for your hard efforts and photographic skill is pretty awesome and at the start of this week I took the opportunity to enjoy *Fuzzypiggy's after he got published in a UK Photography Magazine. It's really nice when something like that happens and the knowledge that across the country - and because of deviantART and other networks - across the world, people are looking at your work. And if you're me, smiling! I once stumbled across *lauren-rabbit's work in Black and White Photography Magazine and was truly proud that somebody I had found here on deviantART was here in my mag! So have you been published? Has your work received any recognition that makes you proud? What are your tips to getting out there and having your work showcased?

R&S - Font Gallery Update!!I am very happy to make an announcement today that is something that I have been eyeing suspiciously for a while and now am very relieved to see it done:

Now, without going into much detail, it used to be subpar. The category names were unprofessional and confusing, leading to frustrating search results and many many miscats.
Over the last month there has been a lot of work put into changing this status.
So first of all I’d like to thank ^Elandria and `Dan-Heffer who were very much in favor of the change and supported me in my endeavours to come up with a good gallery tree, despite being no experts on the topic of fonts, but giving me an outsiders input

One of the more recent articles on the topic of photography explores how an instagram photograph taken during Hurricane Sandy has been selected to be used on the cover of Time Magazine. Perhaps quite fittingly, the title accompanying the image on the front page is Lessons from the storm. Whilst many have learned a lot from Hurricane Sandy and many more are working on rebuilding their lives, one of the biggest lessons for photographers and the world of media could well be that iphone Photographers can be photo-journalists too. We've covered the topic of equipment, capabilities and qualifications many a time before now in Photography Weekly - but what are your thoughts on this article?

Due to time limitations, we were not able to follow our usual pattern of posting semi-finalists for the "Kick Flip For the Cause Contest." As we noted in the contest launch article, the voting involved each of the bands and two professional skaters -- all of whom were headed out on tour -- as well as multiple sponsors, including Boarding for Breast Cancer, Hooligan Skateboards, and Fearless Records. Please accept our apologies for the delay in getting these semi-finalists posted. Without further ado, here are the fabulous 16 semis that may not have reached the final round, but will still receive 800 deviantART Points and a 3-month Premium Membership. It's been some time since this contest wrapped up now, I see some of the other semifinalists have commented, but having another small reminder can help sometimes.

I too am curious how/when we'll be receiving our prizes. Do we really have to wait for a new month to roll around? Or is there something else going on? Some information on this would be reassuring, seeing as communication was already low in regards to this contest...
