September is here, and already there are Halloween decorations in stores. As you may know, I work in the Halloween industry, and while it's cool to see what corporations like the one I work for can come up with, it'd be cool to see YOUR Halloween costumes.
So I am giving you nearly TWO MONTHS to make your own Halloween costume. Now until October 28, 2006 at 11:59 PM, you have the challenge of thinking up, creating, and submitting a costume that will win you the prize.
I will be accepting entries in several different categories that will try for 1 First Place prize and 2 Runner Up prizes
Historical - anything based on a historical period pre 2000. This means historical figures like Napoleon, Marilyn Monroe, or even MC Hammer.
Classic - your take on classic Halloween favorites - vampires, frankenstein, ghosts, mummies, Indians, kitty cats.
Character Based - Raggedy Ann, Romeo and Juliet, the little mermaid, little red riding hood and the big bad wolf, anything based on a character of someone else's but is YOUR TAKE on the character, not a direct copy.
Fan Art - based on a character and made to look EXACTLY how that character was portrayed in a certain movie, book, etc. This might seem like an easy category, but if you attempt Jessica Rabbit, you better get it dead on! Every little detail will be scrutinized since you did not actually design the costume.
And the rules:
Costumes must fit under the textile category for Costumes under Artisan Crafts. If you plan on making a full suit of armor out of metal, it will not qualify.
They will be judged on design, accuracy, novelty, construction, etc. as per the guidelines of each category.
Patterns may be used as bases for the costumes, but must have some modification to make them 'yours'.
Pre-bought components must be limited to trim, shoes, gloves, stockings, or other such accessories and must be stated in the submission so we don't think you made them when you didn't. The actual garment must be made by you.
Items submitted or started before the contest start date do not count.
List any patterns or resources you may have used...especially if its a good one you can share with others! Giving a good description is great for this category.
A nice, clear photo of you in this costume (or whoever you made the costume for, because you can make it for others too) must be submitted. The fullview must not overwhelm the screen. For tips on photographing costumes, please see here
If you are doing the Fan Art category, LINK to a reference shot of the character in the description. Any entries found with copyrighted character art on it are policy violations.
Deadline extension! Entries must be submitted under community projects->contests-> halloween costume contest 2006 by 11:59 PM October 31 to be eligible.
And the PRIZES:
First place - Horror Classics Collection: 50 Movie Pack DVD plus 1 Year Sub
Two runners up - One year subscription to deviantART
See you on Halloween, October 31, with the results!

Honest Art Challenge
Different team members are taking over the @Community group and this week it's @danlev! Copy and paste these 20 questions about being an artist... and answer them honestly! Title your journal "Honest Artist Challenge". 1. A genre or style I've tried and decided isn't for me: Digital art and I aren't really suited, I like to physically hold a marker 2. A common art advice I find hard to follow: Practicing every day is one I'm working on right now but especially as you get older and you have more "responsibilities" (aka kids) it can be hard to carve out time so I've started scheduling doodle time! 3. My biggest art-related fear: Currently, that I will ruin my line art with my colouring :D 4. A project I've been putting off: Finishing some art cards for friends (and shipping the gift I made for @Heidi) 5. A subject I feel like I'll never master: Hands.. everything forever will have paws or hands in their pockets :D 6. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate my skills as an
Self Survey
@TheLaurenVerse has thrown down the gauntlet over at @Community and challenged us all to share a little bit about ourselves! Meaning of my username "moonbeam" had been my handle since the internet began but it was taken on DA so I added my favourite number and here we are :D One Meal to Rule Them All I love food but I'm pretty boring when it comes to something I would want to eat every day for the rest of my life :) I think it comes down to a comforting bowl of oatmeal with maple syrup or a trusty peanut butter and jelly sandwich -- never disappointing! Best Gift Ever This is an extremely difficult question because I honestly feel like most gifts are pretty special but let's get sentimental and say my little bug -- he wasn't supposed to be possible but here he is anyways  Job I Wanted When I Was Little I wanted to be a librarian and made a little library for my friends to borrow books from on my front porch :nerd: Skill I Want to Learn I
