I'm sorry but... I'm having some troubles in finding the announcement. Where exactly is it? Because I can only see the results for "Diorama contest" and not "Fotolia Stockpocalypse" O_o

what's the point in making them the semi-finalists and then disqualify them afterwards...?

Hey guys, just to let you know... I assumed there were about 200 entrants into this competition but... I checked out all the submissions and we all had to beat nearly 1800 entries to get to the top 25! So even if you got disqualified it's still good to have sort of made it this far.

Although there was a ton of non-relevant entries (people not even using the stock OR the theme) it's still a lot. :)

Any news on when the finalists will be announced?

They contacted me for photo ID last week. They may be waiting on the others to send in theirs to prove their eligibility. No idea how long it will be honestly.

Well, when I first saw your image (while I thought it was really cool by itself) I didn't think you'd even get through because there's pretty much nothing left of the original photo/the people. That said, one or two up there did the same thing. But maybe they'll get disqualified too. Or it could be the violence :/

First of all, thanks for your comment, then, I do realize that I modified pretty much everything of the original photo, but like you said there are others that still remain on this selection that did considerably the same... and I want to believe that the violence is not a disqualifying factor... I don't recall it being in the official rules

Yeah I gave it some more thought and totally think it's because you changed the people too much. Each one has it's main thing that you're not allowed to move - hence yours and the house with the dude fishing got disqualified. It's one of those things in the art world - read your brief and stick to it like glue. I've done it before where I read the brief, forget the brief, do a piece and re-read the brief when it's finished and bam - missed something vital. Hell, at least you sort of got through!

i might have an ideea about why mine was removed. maybe its because of the placement of the core elements. But then again, you respected that and still was removed. so i have no clue yet.

perhaps they were super strict on keeping the main subject, in the case of the family perhaps their pose should have been respected and not transformed at all. Who knows :/

Anarki.. I think I figured out why yours was disqualified... The size of the picture HAD to be the same as the original... 4288x2848... yours is only 1097x729. Other than that I think it was fine :) Sorry it got disqualified :( It is a great rendition of the end of the world :)

theres actually nothing more to say.. judges are judges, opinions are opinions.. depends on what they want in the magazine. Can't say i don't care.. its a thousand bucks though. Oportunities are all over the place and I'm not done yet.

on the other hand entry that took your spot doesn't maintain position of elements nor the aspect ratio of original picture...?!?

very strange, I wonder why? your piece was great, though I have to say from the beginning on i was afraid the orientation of the main elements might have been to different from the original. I really got the idea they almost wanted to be able to 'fade' between before and after so you'd see a perfect transition.. but then when I look at SalcorID's work.. I'm clueless.

well yes. when i saw my work missing it kinda struck me.. did they actually mean it was THAT strict?
and also maybe its because i was the winner of their previous contest and they want to have another. but thats just not fair.
aniways, hope you win this one for me. your technique is really shown in your entry and your works are really great.

i dont think they would disqualify you because you won a previous contest. there is no way.
i'm thinking its the placement of the core elements and the main composition.
surely the house by itself is a bit boring and not so interesting composition-wise, which is why you elaborated on it, but
if you just think about the contest it seems kind of clear what they wanted (atleast for me): a high quality example of how you can turn a stockphoto into something else. in the case of the house it should be easily and clearly recognizable how the picture was transformed, and that it is the main subject and not one of the many stock images used in the final picture.

either way, very nice work and thanks for the support :)

I have to say that I was very surprised when I saw my piece among these 25, I thought it was going to be more popular based (since mine wasn't one of the most popular) but Hey, here I am, I also have to say that there were many others that I like that are not here and that's a pity.

Best of luck to everyone,

I think there are some great ones featured here! My favorite one is 'Lonely Up Here'.
Although I gotta say I didn't see any of the entries before this 'semi-finalists announcement' so there might have been greater ones that didn't make the cut.

Okay, so mine didnt make the cut, "too bad" but its kind of a kick in the pants when you stick to the brief like glue and even put in the element of photography to advertise a photo sharing website, you know, like they survived the end of the world but were still keen on photography or whatever spin you want to put on my work for this competition to make it work as an advertisement for Fotolia. I would have loved to win but to not even be placed in the 25? that just doesnt ring true to me. Dont get me wrong, most of the guys who are through really deserve to be there but there are like three that are totally terrible as advertisements for Fotolia. I may have taken one section of the brief too literally but hey ho, you win some you dont even get placed for some. Best of luck to you guys who I think actually deserve to be in the final.
