These are pretty nice, though I am of the opinion that it is impossible to hold a truly unbiased art contest. The closest would be to have a voting system, but even that would reflect the bias of the community (this one leans a lot towards digital/cartoon/cutesy styles), and it would be difficult to get around the unbalance caused by super-popular people vs virtually unknown ones. Art is just too subjective to be held to contests such as these, especially in very large communities like dA where there are loads of different great artists to choose from.

Can we just talk about why this didn't win?: artgerm.deviantart.com/art/Dra…

Like WHY? This person had quite the improvement, and I think they deserved it after almost 20 years of practice!

The saying "Do your research" is usually rude. But I kinda don't even really care, I stated my opinion on this journal, left and didn't expect for it to get replied to.

These are amazing pieces, my only complaint is how they were judged. I think the contest would have fit the theme better if they chose the work with the most improvement involved. c: Good job winners!

Yeah, agreed... Some of them aren't really "better", they just changed their style quite a lot...
I get the feeling this contests have a lot to do with how popular the deviant is :c
I saw entries where the difference between the "after" and the "before" work was much bigger and impressive than here. But oh well, some of them are still really good :)

Deviantart contests are bogus. It's a giant popularity contest. I seriously doubt that every piece was judged,  the ones that were probably weren't based on improvement. I've seen a LOT better improvement from other artists. I love how all the winners are of popular DA accounts and that the art pieces were highly detailed to begin with. How about beginner artists who learned how to proportion or basic art that  became detailed? No, the people that won changed their drawing style, they were the same to begin with. There is no "improvement." A lot of the artwork up there is completely different from the original piece. Why? As I said, they didn't improve, they changed drawing styles. If they improved they would have added more proportion and detail to their original work. However, they didn't because they reached what I like to call their "drawing complicity." Once you learn how to proportion and add detail, you come up with a drawing style. That drawing style will develop with time, and then you can't get any better. You can only change drawing styles. This is what these artists did. There are wayyyyy too many people who are more deserving than these artists to have won, but like I said, this site is crap. Between the trolls, nudes making it to the front of DA instead of meaningful art, and these "contests," I'm just so done with this site. This place isn't art. The only thing people notice here is revealed bodies and colorful digital art. Have you seen traditional art like the stuff on the "newest" page make it to the front? NO. It's ALL digital. Goodbye, SO DONE. YOU ALL SUCK SO BAD. :finger:

I agree, I have seen better improvements from other artists as well. And I also think that most of the winners have already highly detailed works to begin with, and the main difference is the style. They are good, but the improvement isn't that huge compared to other submissions I've seen.

However I disagree that DA contests are simply popularity contests, at least not with this one. I've checked all the winners' profiles and the highest pageview count was 50k+, not really what I would consider a "popular" artist on DA. And personally, I haven't encountered that many "trolls," "horny bastards" or horrible people in general here on DA, so I don't understand why you hate it so much. In fact I have come across so many people who give constructive feedback and criticism in a nice and calm manner, and debates/arguments that are objective, with minimal swearing, if any.

By the way, traditional art is still recognized. I agree that on DA digital art is more popular, but it depends on where you're looking. On the internet, digital art is definitely going to overpower traditional, because the internet itself works on a digital device. In "real life," traditional art is still very prominent. Street art, paintings, sculptures - they're practically everywhere.

woah i thought i was the only one (perhaps) that has noticed that more and more Digital Art is just taking over not only this site, but practically everywhere in the art field than Traditional. Even at Uni (barely started) lets say 5 out of the 17 in my class are sticking with Traditional methods of art, while the rest are going to move on to Digital/Animation.
Quite sad really...

Yes, unless you do something amazing out of this world traditional..... not a lot of people seem to have the patience, or should I say time to wait for what traditional media does, and as well as with digital, if you make a mistake it is much more easier to erase than to wait and try to fix the mistake or start all over....
it is... it really is :iconcryforeverplz:

It's like music. Nothing is by instrument, it's all synth and autotune. No real talent on this planet anymore. Tecnology has made everyone a lazy bastard.

Actually, most entertainment industries such as gaming companies are turning back towards instrumental now that the new consoles can handle large sound files. Even the majority of movie OSTs are instrumental.

If you're only looking at pop artists/mainstream, then yes, it's pretty much all synth and autotune. But outside of that, the instrumental world is thriving and surviving rather well.

You know what isnt art? Bitching about other peoples creations, that they put well over the time it took to type out your shitty, ill willed comment. All I can say is all the artists up there are DESERVING. SO. FUCKING. DESERVING. They have worked hard, put blood, tears and sweat into their drawings. You think nudes arnt art? Bitch, the most famous statues and paintings of Rome and the Renascence are nudes. Fucking get over it, its the human form. As for trolls, they get attention because they are piece of shit no lifes- like you. Highly detailed art makes it GOOD. Details are GOOD. Why have a plain box, when you can have a shaded, textured and patterned box? And yeah, fucking drawing style. It makes shit unique. You know why so many artists are popular? They have a fucking expressive, enigmatic, and wonderful art style. Again, FUCKING ART. THIS IS IT.

Also, go fuck yourself with a glass shard.

"You know what isnt art? Bitching about other peoples creations" I never disliked the creations, I dislike this website. Also, my opinion may be bitchy, but it's self expression so it is art.

"that they put well over the time it took to type out your shitty, ill willed comment" How ironic and hypocritical of you.

"All I can say is all the artists up there are DESERVING. SO. FUCKING. DESERVING."  They are good, but other people are more deserving who don't get credit for their work.

"They have worked hard, put blood, tears and sweat into their drawings." I didn't realize that artists press on their pencil do hard that they sweat and bleed.

"You think nudes arnt art? Bitch, the most famous statues and paintings of Rome and the Renascence are nudes. Fucking get over it, its the human form." I never said nudes aren't art. In fact, my favorite piece of art is a nude, the sculpture of David. I was referring to people who take pictures of themselves naked (without meaning) for the sake of attracting perverted men.

"As for trolls, they get attention because they are piece of shit no lifes- like you" I'm troll for expressing my opinion?
I must really be an awful person, after all I call people low life pieces of shit on the internet along with dropping f-bombs.

"Highly detailed art makes it GOOD. Details are GOOD. Why have a plain box, when you can have a shaded, textured and patterned box? And yeah, fucking drawing style. It makes shit unique." At least you understood some of what I was saying.

"And yeah, fucking drawing style. It makes shit unique." If it's your own drawing style.

"You know why so many artists are popular? They have a fucking expressive, enigmatic, and wonderful art style."  I can show you several accounts were this is bullshit.

"Again, FUCKING ART. THIS IS IT." Never said the pieces above weren't art sweetie.

"Also, go fuck yourself with a glass shard." Oh? You're threatening me? That supports your argument very well.

You are trying so hard to sound smart and it's making you look like stupid. Stop making up things I never said. When you have a valid argument where I can't disprove your every sentence, let me know. I'm a troll? HOW IRONIC.

Oh yes -- traditional art does get attention.
*WildSpiritWolf gets payed so much in commissions and draws such good art -- she's one of the most popular artists on here.
*NatsumeWolf same case. one of the more popular comics.
And I could name a heap more.

Look how old their accounts are compared to digital artists with the same amount of views. The traditional art has been on DA for 6 and 9 years with 1,100+ deviations. Most digital artists have about 300 pieces of art and have been on DA about 1-4 years. Take that into consideration. Traditional art isn't recognized.

That depends on what type of artist they are though. Those of us with webcomics are going to have a lot of deviations because we post a lot of pages.

I also do a lot of traditional work, too. I just don't post all of it (sometimes because I'm a little too lazy to take a picture and crop it and everything, but also because these days, every traditional piece I've done that I think looks good, I'm saving for my portfolio for uni. I can't post anything that I plan on putting into my portfolio online because one of the unies I applied to doesn't allow that).

What I'm noticing is how most of the drawings that make it to the front page are anime drawings, most of which look like the same style's been used. Mind you, I've got nothing against anime (I used to draw in that style, though I'm trying to branch out of that and go more towards semi-realism). I just don't like how over 75% of front page deviations are anime digital drawings, some of which aren't really that original.
