It never ceases to amaze me how quickly a year can fly by. I've made it a practice over the years to sit back and reflect on the year, what went well, what didn't and where I'd like to see the new year go. A year can bring a lot of lessons and without reflection it's hard to ensure that you've taken away everything important from it. I apply this personally and to deviantART and it's that time again

Recently, I announced changes to Daily Deviations in this journal and I'm happy to say that the response has been favorable. To review, we have made the following changes:
a> The "3-month rule" is now the "6-month rule" meaning an artist cannot receive another DD if they have had one in the last 6 months.
b> Daily Deviation selectors are limited to a maximum of one selection per day. This has been put in place to focus on quality vs quantity.
The hard-coding of these new guidelines is now in place (special thanks to $ZombieCoder for that

Noticeably in the past few weeks, more and more people seem to be speaking up and making noise at the fact that aren't making money from their photography. There's no doubt about it - Photography starts out as a hobby. You don't one day pick up a camera and decide that you are going to be a pro and get given your first paycheck. It's one of those unique hobbies where you get a gentle introduction around age 10 with your first proper camera (haha) and the rest is History. Whatever you make it really. You can't say that about most professions.
Putting yourself out there is something I've been trying to hammer home the past week, you'll have noticed my ramble if you read last weeks edition of Photography weekly. Getting paid for it is another matter. Sometimes you have to make sacrifices. Sometimes, you might not get paid for what you do.

Update: Fair Exposure and Popular Browse

Fair Exposure and miscategorization
On January 24th, 2012, we released an #hq journal regarding Popular results for Browse. In this journal, we described Fair Exposure -- deviantART's algorithm for Popular browse results. Fair Exposure's goal is to showcase the most popular deviations in a variety of styles, genres, and art forms, without bias towards a particular topic.
Since the release of our Fair Exposure announcement, especially in the last handful of weeks, we've noticed a concerted, dedicated effort made by deviants, or groups of deviants, to specifically beat (or "game") the system. Deviations have been intentionally miscategorized in hopes of having them appear "higher" in Popular results. This has, rightfully so, resulted in complaints from deviants who submit to deviantART in a fair and honest manner.

Announcing the 10 Semi-Finalists delivered to Tim Burton for his final judgment!

Our staff judges pored through thousands of portraits featuring Barnabas, a dashing vampire played by Johnny Depp in Tim Burton’s latest film, Dark Shadows. It wasn’t easy but we finally narrowed it down to these special 10 Semi-Finalists for the Dark Shadows Barnabas Portrait Project!

In addition to cash awards, points, backpacks and devWEAR, the Grand-Winner as well as Second and Third place winners will be made into framed prints and presented to Tim Burton as a gift from the deviantART community. The remaining 7 Semi-Finalists will get a dA Digital Backpack, Dark Shadows merchandise, deviantART Points and a One Year Premium Membership to deviantART!

The one and only Tim Burton will now select the final three winners!

As a Tradtional Artist I always feel a little bit out matched with the digital contestants. So for this contest I took my painting and turned it into a few digital pieces as well. Wish it was in the top ten. I have to say the top ten are not the ones I would have picked perhaps one or two of them were but their were others I personally liked better. I guess that is a matter of taste but In the rules they did say that skill was part of the judging and I got to say that the level of skill in the top ten is not as good as the ones I liked. Not going to rant and rave about my entries because as the contest was closing out I saw some many great pieces entered into this contest. I truly feel that the selections were weak at best and Tim Burton not going to see the great art that was created. Perhaps running a contest with both digital and traditional in one category is a BAD idea... oh well. Had to at least throw in my two cents. Sorry to offend the winners If I did I do feel at least some of you deserve to be there.
