For all of those whom are acting like school yard children here below, grow up and stop saying such ugly things to each other.

Please for the love of art and the artist be much kinder to each other and try to help out more.

Hi Danielle,
I've been a computer tech since way back in 1983. We were still using punch cards and mainframe monstrosities back then. I currently run a free computer tech email group where folks can get support for both hardware & software issues, so I deal with this sort of thing all the time. :(

This news post is a great service to ALL dA members, but especially those who aren't very technically oriented and more prone to clicking on one of these malicious links. I've seen where a number of folks have been saying that they not only clicked on one of them, but they also inherited a nasty bug on their systems as well.

Well, I just wrote out full instructions on dealing with it in my Journal and you're more than welcome to send folks there who ask for info on what they can do about fixing their computers.

Specifically, I'm strongly recommending that they enlist the help of one of many available HijackThis forums to help them clean out the infection. These folks are highly trained and provide this service absolutely free of charge. It will save anyone who takes the advice and negate the need to take the system to a computer shop where they're likely to be charged way more than the cleanup is actually worth.

It's basically a fake DA page where they want you to type your username and password so they can steal it (or so I've heard)

I suggest using firefox 3 and installing WOT (web of trust) add-on. it will block those stupid sites even if you click the link.

I received a similar message a week ago, and opened it unaware...
Now I'm infected with a dialer virus from it that I can't find or pin-point!
(everytime I log on to the internet they are seeing what I see)
Has anybody else had this problem?
I'm pissed-off...
Where is it (name, etc.) and how can I nuke it?
I don't want to pay $200 to take my puter in to the shop.

Drumb,
I'm a computer tech and I help folks deal with these types of things.

The first thing I would do is to download a utility called HijackThis from TrendMicro Anti-virus. Once installed, it will scan your system and create a log showing all of the programs and processes that start up with your system. This log can then be used by someone knowledgeable to figure out exactly which infection you have and how to best get rid of it without the need to take it to the shop or wipe the drive. The first link is to the HijackThis page where you can read more about it before you download and install it.

[link]

Once downloaded, you may have to rename the file before installing it because some of the more modern infections prevent security programs from installing or running unless they're renamed. I usually just change the name to abc.exe just before installing it, but you can use any name you like that's not associated with a security program.

Once it's installed, run and produces a log file, you can then upload the results to one of many HJT forums dedicated to helping folks remove infections using the program. The only people who are allowed to provide this help are trained for nearly a year before they're allowed to help someone without supervision, so you will have a highly trained pro walking you through the steps you need to take to clear up your machine. Below is a link to just one of the forums I mentioned to make things a bit easier on you, but there are plenty more to choose from and they can be found with a simple Google search for the terms "HijackThis Forum".

[link]

If there's anything that I can do to help or if you have any questions about the directions above, please don't hesitate to Note me and I'll reply as soon as I receive it. :)

Good luck and let me know how you make out with the forum.
