1. Volunteering

Once upon a time, I was a volunteer, and speaking from experience, it can be a both blessing and a curse.

I believe that many current and former volunteers will agree with that sentiment and I feel it's important to explain a bit about why I believe this to be true.

Maybe you're not aware of the variety of ways people join the volunteer team.  As per FAQ #85: Can I be a volunteer on deviantART? many people send in an application to express their interest in joining the team and I go through those applications and select people I feel would benefit not only the team and the community but also, benefit from the experience.  However, aside from those applications, I also have a habit of hand-picking people based on personalities or traits I've gleaned that I believe would be beneficial to everyone involved and see if they are interested.

I have brought people onto the team after turning them down multiple times because I didn't feel they were ready and gave them advice in regards to areas they needed to improve, because frankly, I was worried about their ability to handle some of the stress that comes with being in the public eye.  If you're one of those people that keeps being passed over and keeps trying anyways - talk to me.  Reach out instead of screaming about the unfairness of my decisions. I'm happy to talk about it and give you pointers but you need to want to have that conversation and you need to be willing to take the advice I provide.

One of the hardest things to deal with as a new volunteer, is the ghost of the volunteer that came before.  Following in someone's footsteps can be intimidating and downright scary.  Every volunteer has brought something to this team and this community regardless of whether they were a 'super' volunteer and did everything under the sun.  The challenge before all of us, is to view everyone as an individual and drop the assumption that every volunteer should be the same and be held to the same crazy standards.

Every volunteer is different. They come to the team with their own strengths, visions, gifts and talents.  They also come with their own view of how best to contribute their time while they are a volunteer and if you take time to read through FAQ #85: Can I be a volunteer on deviantART? you can read examples of how volunteers may choose to spend their time.  By no means are these requirements, they are suggestions and guidelines. Some volunteers will choose to do some of them, some may do all of them and some, may do none of them, but may choose to do other things.  Sometimes involvement is based on their availability and sometimes it's based on strengths, but each person that has joined this team, past and present, has made an effort.

As a community, we can help these volunteers by being supportive instead of judgmental.  Instead of screaming at the new person that they aren't as good as the past person.. how about reaching out, introducing yourself and saying 'so glad you're here! I just wanted to let you know that the community really enjoyed this past activity the previous volunteer used to do and if you could continue it that would be awesome! If you need any help with it, I'd love to help you pull it off!"

Don't attack - assist.

We are a community, and we don't succeed without each other.  We don't grow without nurturing each other.  This works both ways and is outlined in the Core Values upheld by the members of the volunteer team FAQ #84: What are the Core Values of the Community Relations and Operations Departments?.

I write this because I truly believe that we, as a community, need to walk this road together.  So let's ensure the lines of communication are open.  If you want to suggest things, please reach out to your Community Volunteers.  I implore you to get involved in the conversation and always know I'm available to talk to via note or email

I am generally thankful for the work of dA volunteers.  I hope that any expressions of hostility towards them is a rarity.
