DeviantART and Blizzard challenged you to prepare yourself by creating an original artwork featuring one or more of the six heroes of Sanctuary or of Malthael preparing for the upcoming battle. Our judges pored through each entry and selected the top twenty-five works, which will now be sent to Christian Lichtner, Art Director of Diablo III to choose the final three. Congratulations to the 25 Semi-Finalists below!

The remaining 22 Semi-Finalists will receive:
- Signed boxed copy of Diablo III: Reaper of Souls Collector's™ Edition
- 1,000 deviantART points

In the LIGHTNING RETURNS: FINAL FANTASY XIII Contest, we asked you to create a complete customization of Lightning in a first-of-its-kind challenge. The three winners were selected by none other than Final Fantasy legend, Tetsuya Nomura. Not only did the winners get their art displayed in a billboard on the deviantART homepage, but they will also receive $1,000 USD, a LIGHTNING RETURNS: FINAL FANTASY XIII customized Xbox360, an assortment of memorabilia associated with the game, and a signed original sketch from main character designer, Tetsuya Nomura. We would like to congratulate our winners and thank everyone who participated in this contest.

TETSUYA NOMURA’S COMMENTS

At first glance it looks like a CG, and it has a level of quality that makes it look like it was captured as a screenshot. While there were many heroic costumes for Lightning, I was drawn to the femininity of this costume and her hairstyle.

TETSUYA NOMURA’S COMMENTS

With one look I was hooked. The costume itself is sophisticated, and it's also very well done as an illustration. The background that reminded me of the Japanese flag (Hinomaru) matched well with the piece and was beautiful. As an artist, when I look at different works of art, I think to myself "If it were up to me, I would do it differently," but that thought didn't cross my mind once when I saw this picture.

TETSUYA NOMURA’S COMMENTS

It's wonderful as an illustration, but in addition to that, the artist drew in both the front and back views, so I felt the artist's clear intent when they created this piece. The red and blue color scheme was very beautiful, too.

A Personal Note from Moonbeam13 - I'd like to take a moment to apologize for the delay in publishing this newsletter.  Just as it was coming together, my grandfather took a turn for the worst and things got a little hazy.  He passed away on Friday March 7th and today is my first day back at work. 1. New Year = New Crazy

2014 took off from the gate like a well-bred thoroughbred and now two months have gone in the blink of an eye.  While I'm not one for resolutions, I did mark down a few goals for myself, such as getting back to posting on my food blog or learning how to sew.  Some of my goals certainly demand that I consciously carve out time for these things or it just never happens.  Life is busy, but sometimes not good busy, just the busy of everyday crazy and I'm finding as I get older, the everyday crazy takes over and you need to say 'STOP' and take some time for yourself.  I recently read an article about this topic and in it this woman had decided to create a list of all those things she wanted to do but never found the time to.  Whether it was a tedious task of sorting something or taking time to knit, all of these 'non-deadline' items were placed onto the list.  She then devoted one hour each week to tackling something on the list.  She referred to it as her 'power hour' and it stuck with me and I've started implementing the 'Power Hour' into my life.  I think it's doable because it's not a huge commitment.  It's an hour a week, you're not giving up a giant chunk of time but it's enough that I feel that I'm accomplishing things, for me.  Maybe in the future I'll have more than one Power Hour in a week :D

So a couple of questions for you!

1. Did you make any resolutions/goals for this year? If so, what were they (if you don't mind sharing :))
2. What sort of items would you put on your 'Power Hour' list?

2. Volunteer Openings in Community Relations

The Wind Rises Contest

Fri Feb 21, 2014, 10:34 AM
18+ U.S. & Canada

Celebrate the art of Hayao Miyazaki and the North American theatrical release of his last film, "The Wind Rises" by creating a very special Tribute to the film's art. Your Tribute will be used to promote the release of "The Wind Rises" on deviantART.

We ask that you combine elements from the images provided in the Asset Pack with your own inspiration to build your Tribute artwork.

"The Wind Rises" tells the story of one of Japan's most important aviation engineers against the backdrop of the major events of the 20th century. Critics have been overwhelmed by the artistry in this final masterwork from the brilliant animator and storyteller, Hayao Miyazaki. This is your opportunity to enter into his world and recast its elements into a final Tribute.

The three winning entries will be used on deviantART to promote the film's release. Each winning artwork will be made into a framed presentation print sent to Studio Ghibli in Japan.

The Artist Behind The Lexus IS Design

Fri Jan 17, 2014, 10:52 AM

Robert Evans (PSAS), a longtime member of the deviantART community, has succeeded in making a radical artistic statement about turning artists' visions into actual realities.

Robert's pathway to actualization of his vision was facilitated by forward-thinking executives at Lexus who reached out to the creative cutting edge, to deviantART artists, for new revolutionary design ideas for the production of their 2014 Lexus IS. The Lexus IS Design Contest was born and dA's Robert Evans has come away with the prize: experiencing having his personal artistic conceptualization of how an automobile should look and roll become a real world reality. As Grand Prize Winner, the new Lexus built to Robert's design was debuted at the SEMA auto show in Las Vegas before 60,000 US and international buyers and then featured at the Los Angeles Auto Show before 12,000 industry decision-makers and 4,000 media correspondents from 50 countries.

Daring to Dream a Dream into Reality! For the first time in deviantART's history, one winner was going to see their vision brought to life in a physical, working automobile!

DeviantART continues, through initiatives like this contest, in our mission to inspire, support and champion all artists worldwide who dare to believe that what is born in the artistic imagination can become a reality and positively transform our world around us.

DeviantART is proud to have co-sponsored this innovative contest in car body design in partnership with Lexus. Judging was conducted by representatives from Lexus North America, MotorTrend, VIP Auto Salon, and Calty Design Research, Inc.

From your Gallery, it's clear that you're a car lover. What about the Lexus IS Design Contest compelled you to enter?

The design aspect - being able to design my ultimate version of the car, the trip to SEMA was a big factor (huge enthusiast of the show). The idea of having my design built into a car was a big needle mover. The entire prize package (including the lease) was extremely incentivizing. I also entered the Scion contest 6 years ago but unfortunately didn't win.

Do you prefer to create car designs from a base model, or would you like to design a functional car body from scratch?

I don't really have a preference. It is fun to start with a base because you have existing design language to deal with - it can be fun to play off of that. That said, you have to ensure that you are keeping within the guidelines. On the other hand, creating something new is fun and exciting as well as you have the artistic license to make all of the decisions.

What's your artistic background? How did you get into car design?

I've always painted, sketched and drawn. I was always really interested in creating things. In HS I took every art class I could. When I was in College I also took a lot of art classes. About four years ago I worked in a warehouse - I was managing the fulfillment for a home and garden company. At that time my employers asked me where I saw myself moving career wise. I told them that I was interested in art and design. Luckily they gave me the flexibility to do that. Today I design home and garden accessories. For example, garden gnomes, Halloween miniatures and wind chimes. In addition to this I am responsible for our presence at trade shows (set design, graphic design and so forth). I've always been a car lover. I build scale models, I always loved radio-controlled cars, I'm a huge car lover and designing content around cars has always been a passion point for me. The industry itself also fascinates me. I'm very much a product of the stereotype of boys and cars.

What's your artistic process when sitting down to design a car?

A lot of the time I will find something that inspires me. For example, a certain line or form. I'll then start with pen sketching to get the form. Once I figure that out I refine the sketch and then take it into Photoshop to work further. If I want to do 3D work (for example wheels) I will go to sketch-up. Wheels in the absence of a 3D program can be a bit daunting. Interestingly, for the Lexus program I didn't need to do that many sketches - the idea came to me pretty quickly.

Your Gallery has mostly car-related deviations. Do you dabble in designing other types of machinery? Airplanes, boats, mechs?

Yes. I've done airplanes, mechs, soft surface work like character design and creatures. I like character design. Soft surface is a totally different genre than hard surface - it gets me thinking in different ways. For example, in hard surface if something isn't 100% accurate it doesn't work - soft surface allows more creativity and artistic license. With that said, my gallery isn't 100% reflective of my soft surface interests. In the future I hope to add more diversity to my gallery to better reflect my total interests.

What are you most excited to see at SEMA?

Well, my design for one! Apart from that, I'm interested in seeing the current state of tuning culture and customization. You can only do so much web research. When you go to the mecca (like SEMA) you really get a feel for customization. SEMA is the fashion show for the automotive industry.

What kind of driver are you?

Well, it all depends on the vehicle. In my current car I drive all the way in the right hand lane, going the speed limit and listening to my stereo really loud while trying to stay out of the way! With that said, in my old car (Nissan 240sx) I had a REALLY loud exhaust and used to love to go through tunnels and show it off. It had some modifications and tire screeching wasn't totally off the table! I'm really looking forward to driving the new IS that Lexus is giving me. I'm sure in that car I will hug the corners a little bit closer and take full advantage of the vehicle's excellent drivability.

Check out the contest article here and the entry gallery here.

Check out all the SEMA photos here and all of the press articles here.

What would be your dream contest, dream sponsor, and dream prize?

Apparently we're supposed to blame LaurenKitsune but madizzlee tagged me so :shakefist:  here we go!

1.) Grab the book nearest to you, turn to page 18, and find line 4.
"Some people will always fear change. But we can't indulge them" - Allegiant by Veronica Roth

2.) Stretch your left arm out as far as you can. What can you reach?
A tube of hand lotion (it's really cold out, my hands are dry)

3.) What is the last thing you watched on TV?
The White Queen

4.) Without looking guess what time it is?
2:00pm

5.) Now look at the clock. What is the actual time?
2:20pm

6.) With the exception of the computer, what can you hear?
Zaphod (our bird) making weird chirping/talking noises.  I can also hear the wind because it's frighteningly cold outside.

7.) When did you last step outside? What were you doing?
I had to run out to buy milk this morning.

8.) Before you started this survey, what did you look at?
I looked outside the window to see if it still looked really cold out, it does. (are you sensing a theme?)

9.) What are you wearing?
The better question is 'Why are you not wearing your onesie?'

10.) Did you dream last night?
If I did I didn't remember it :(

11.) When did you last laugh?
About 10 minutes ago when the bird flew down to the cat's bowl and ate his food.  My cat is a pansy, he just watched in amazement. Then the bird took a bath in the cat's water bowl.

12.) What are on the walls you are in?
A lot of art and personal photos.

13.) Seen anything weird lately?
If you've met my husband, you know that the answer to this question is always yes. In order to preserve what innocence you have, I'll save you the details of his insanity :)

14.) What do you think of this quiz?
I don't hate it, yet.

15.) What was the last film you saw?
The Hobbit

16.) If you became a multi-millionaire overnight, what would you buy?
Plane tickets.

17.) Tell me something about you that I don't know?
I'm a chef, and a couple of nights a week, I work in a restaurant.

18.) If you could change one thing about the world.
It would be common place to choose acceptance over anything else.

19). What do you want to learn in the future?
I really want to learn how to sew. I got sewing machine for my birthday last year with the intention to figure it out but never gave myself the time. This year I'll figure it out :)

20.) George Bush:
No

21.) Imagine your first child is a girl, what do you call her?
Maggie, after my Grandmother.

22.) Imagine your first child is a boy, what do you call him?
Harrison, because 'Harrison Ward' is badass and we have a strange sense of humour.

23.) Would you ever consider living abroad?
In a heartbeat :)

24.) What do you want God to say when you reach the pearly gates?
You've been punk'd

25.) Tag six people who must also do this in THEIR journal:
If you would like to do this, feel free! I'm saving you from the feeling of obligatory completion :) However, if you do complete it, please leave a link in the comments below!

1. Merry New Year

As we get older it always seems to feel like time just flies by and part of that is likely due to us trying to shove a lot of things into a day, something I'm certainly guilty of doing.  I'm not a resolution person, but I am a reflective person.  I use this time to reflect on the year that's passed and what I did, what went well and what went wrong. 2013 was no different, however, it seemed to be a year of challenges for both myself and those around me.  It seemed to be a year of personal difficulties and the feeling of constantly climbing insurmountable mountains (ironically I also climbed the Great Wall of China in 2013 so there's that)  There were other highlights as well and with that here's just a few of the things that went down in 2013:

:bulletpink: At the beginning of 2013 we introduced Commissions a way for content creators to generate real earnings through custom creations.

:bulletpink: deviantART introduced Undiscovered a feature I still refer to as a favourite of mine :) I continue to find things I never would have found without it :)

:bulletpink: We introduced the mention system and implemented new user symbols

:bulletpink: We turned 13! Which incidentally is my favourite number ;)

I encourage your continued feedback regarding the site and its features as it helps guide us with improvements and fixes.

With that I'm challenging you to reflect a little yourself and leave the responses in the comments below:

  1. What was your highlight for the last year? (deviantART related or not, list as many as you like :))
  2. Which feature/change or improvement would you like to see in 2014 (List below and link examples or visuals if applicable)

I want to thank you for continuing to be the biggest and best community out there and sharing your thoughts and opinions (even the loud ones!!) on a regular basis.  YOU make this community what it is and I thank you a million times for letting me be a part of that.  The deviantART Community will always be home for me. I'm looking forward to what 2014 brings and I am grateful that we get to do that together!

#devart

Wed Dec 4, 2013, 2:03 PM

#devart is deviantART's Official chatroom, it is advertised as such on the Chat homepage, and we encourage people to join and 'meet fellow deviants'.

A concern we've encountered is that #devart is not always very welcoming. Over time the enforcement of some of the room's rules has become very lax, and the room can at times be intimidating for new members.  Recently we have been exploring ways to improve on the culture of #devart and make the experience more welcoming and enjoyable for everyone.  I appreciate there have been some confusing messages and that's why I'm posting this to explain the direction going forward and get the community support we need to drive positive change.

First and foremost, it's important to note that these aren't exactly 'changes'.  These are policies and rules that have always been in place, but for one reason or another, haven't been upheld as they probably should have been. As #devart is a part of deviantART, it is subject to all of the policies in place for the site itself which include the Etiquette Policy.

As #devart is meant to be a general chatroom for everyone, certain etiquette rules need to be adhered to. Overtly sexual themes, harassing or threatening commentary, hate speech, racist or bigoted remarks and slurs, and overly offensive language are areas that volunteers and staff will be looking to address.

I fully appreciate that people swear.  I swear - a lot.  However, as the Official chatroom of deviantART, #devart is not exactly the appropriate place to be throwing around the ugliest of words you can come up with.  There's also a vast difference between swearing to someone and swearing at them. So yes, swearing in context could be fine but if you're asked to tone it down, please do so.  This isn't about a power struggle, it's about trying to find a comfortable level for everyone.

This is a work in progress, and there are going to be questions. People are going to ask me about specific words and whether they're okay.  We are not banning words, we are looking at context and excessive usage and I feel that common sense will win the battle here.  I'm confident that our community has enough to make this an achievable goal.

I would also like to look at running more events in #devart, and would welcome your participation in the planning and execution.  If you have suggestions for the sorts of things you'd like to see there, please contact me via email at moonbeam13@deviantart.com or leave your thoughts in the comments below,

We are asking for your participation in making #devart what it was always meant to be :)

Thank you!

Movember

Tue Nov 19, 2013, 11:08 AM

Hi everyone :)

Movember is well underway and we are past the half-way mark! Shave off events are eagerly awaited by our Mo'Bros who have suffered through all sorts of mo-mishaps over the last 19 days.  For those of you that have participated, I thank you and ask you to make the next 11 days really count and reach out to your friends and families for those last minute donations.

For the rest of you, I am making this final push on behalf of all of our teams to request that you reach into your pockets and make a donation, regardless of how big or small, to the Movember effort.  I realize how difficult this is at this time of the year,  but should you find a dollar or two - we would greatly appreciate your donation :)

The amount isn’t important, every little bit helps Movember continue its funding of world-class programs.  If you want to know more about what you’ll be helping to fund, you can visit Funding Overview.
