Computer Idle? Save a Life!

Journal Entry: Wed Feb 20, 2008, 12:25 PM

Moonbeam13's Journal

=TheRevolutionX posted a comment on a previous journal that said:

not to get off subject but do you know of any shared computing efforts out there for these types of problems, it would a cool way to be pro active. letting someone searching for a cure use your computers wasted clock cycles.

instead of your screen saver kicking in you go help on looking for a cure. i sure as hell would rather do that then have SETI running on my machine :)

I knew I had heard of some but I vowed to find out and find out I have. I didn't have to look far as the people that are responsible for SETI, run the rosetta@home project.

So let me back-track a moment for those who are reading this and have gotten this far in the journal and think I'm speaking another language.

BOINC (Berkley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing) is a piece of software that runs on your computer instead of your normal screensaver. However, BOINC is not the research project, it's the platform you use to choose the projects you want to participate in. Research projects require HUGE amounts of computer power and supercomputers are limited and expensive. What BOINC does, is allow researchers to use your computer when you aren't. Your computer automatically downloads work, processes the data and sends it back to the lab.. pretty cool!

SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.) is probably one of the most well-known of these projects but for those phialthropists out there, I recommend rosetta@home:

“Rosetta@home needs your help to determine the 3-dimensional shapes of proteins in research that may ultimately lead to finding cures for some major human diseases. By running the Rosetta program on your computer while you don’t need it you will help us speed up and extend our research in ways we couldn’t possibly attempt without your help. You will also be helping our efforts at designing new proteins to fight diseases such as HIV, Malaria, Cancer, and Alzheimer’s…”

If you're ready to get started go to rosetta@home homepage and select to download BOINC

Once BOINC has downloaded you can add the rosetta@home project and get your computer working :)

I run both, the amount my machine is on at times, they get an even share of work. Atleast now we can find aliens and a cure at the same time! :#1:

I have a similar thing on my computer called folding@home. It's so nice to know that while your pc is idling you can be helping other people.
