It is better to light a candle, than to curse the darkness - Chinese proverb
This weekend saw a record amount of walkers with 5,521 showing up for the journey and raising a phenomenal 17.3 million dollars towards the fight against breast cancer.
Funds from The Weekend to End Breast Cancer have supported a tremendous range of initiatives including: the first Weekend to End Breast Cancer Chair in Breast Cancer Research, held by Dr. Tak Mak at The Campbell Family Institute for Breast Cancer Research; the establishment of the first comprehensive Survivorship Program in Canada, led by Dr. Pam Catton; the ongoing enhancement of clinical support led by Dr. David McCready, Head of the Breast Site; the redevelopment of the M. Lau Breast Centre, a comprehensive breast imaging program; funding for the purchase of a Breast MRI machine; the advancement of the Pathology Tumour Bank; research in to breast cancer prevention and, the rapid diagnosis pilot project. Together, with the support from people like you, we are an unstoppable force and the cure is within sight.
I've had an incredible couple of days. I've journeyed 60km's, alongside my trooper of a mom, through the streets of Toronto and witnessed first hand the kindness of strangers. They offered us drinks, food, and use of their facilities. They cheered us on and motivated us to keep going. I was reminded (about 5,000 times) that my boyfriend (*
theblackmass) is an angel as he followed the group on his motorcycle to meet me at each conceivable turn and then waiting and cheering on other women before hunting me down again. I was inspired as I walked with survivors, fighters and family members who were determined to also leave their mark in the fight against breast cancer.
I am humbled, motivated and empowered.
As Margaret Mead once said "Never believe that a few caring people can't change the world. For, indeed, that's all who ever have."
And that's exactly what we're doing, see you in 2008
