I am beyond frustrated with the constant comparisons to other sites.
OH NOES! We're turning into Myspace! and with the launch of film coming.. OH NOES we're going to become youtube.
Let's get something straight for those just tuning in. deviantART was an art-based community that was established on August 7, 2000.
Myspace was launched in 2003 and youtube in 2005.
We were a social network before Myspace started, we're not becoming anything "different", we're still an art site. Just because you're just now noticing web cam shots and glorified self-portraits does not change the fact that they were here years ago as well. It's not surprising to learn that many of your fellow deviants have accounts on Myspace, livejournal, etc etc etc. So it equally shouldn't be surprising that some of the things they post may be reflective of that.
Does that change the fact that we're an art site? no it doesn't. Myspace is currently losing favor to facebook, when are the stamps starting for that one??
As for the new "OH NOES" about youtube, if anything, watching what they've gone through has helped us learn what not to do. However, the fact that people are crediting entire genres to the non-phenomena of youtube and myspace is dumbfounding.
We are a social network but we are an art site as well and that's what sets us apart from the other social networks out there. We're the biggest, and the baddest and we work damn hard to preserve our niche in the "social network web". Comparing us to some come as you are site because it's the new 'trend' is not only insulting to me as a person who slaves for this community, but to the artists who fill our galleries with exceptional pieces of work everyday.
'
Do we have sketchy pieces? Sure, we span a multitude of age ranges, styles and genres and I guarantee you it's not all going to suit your tastes. Art is subjective, it wasn't meant to be easily digestible by the masses. In fact, that type of art tends to make me nuts and if you're into that buy a postcard. The awesome thing about deviantART is that you can find something that appeals to you and if you're an artist, you can express yourself in whatever way you need to (providing there are no policies broken

)
Artists have to start somewhere, and we work hard to improve our art.
I don't know about you but I didn't wake up one day channeling Joel Peter-Witkin or Ansel Adams.
Take a minute before you start casting stones and remember when you first started. Maybe then you'll be a little more forgiving of those that come after you.

Fear is a byproduct of ignorance. Respect is a result of knowledge. Power is the utilization of both for one's own ends.
From raw power some chaos. From control of chaos comes true power.

Art, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder and the heart of the artist.
There's room for all of us here, honest.
