Believe It

Journal Entry: Mon Apr 1, 2013, 8:21 AM

For the past 10 years , I have walked The Weekend and I'm so glad that I did. Shoppers Drug Mart® Weekend to End Women's Cancers benefiting The Campbell Family Institute at The Princess Margaret is not only an amazing experience, but the funds raised through it are providing funding now for research that will make breakthroughs bigger than ever would have been possible without The Weekend. I encourage you to read about how they put those dollars to work here

I'd also love for you to read this report about the amazing breakthroughs and discoveries made to date, as a result of our efforts.

Since it began in 2003, The Weekend has raised over 100 million dollars for The Princess Margaret Hospital, which is phenomenal, and YOU played a key role in that accomplishment. But as momentous as that is, it will take continued effort and dedication to truly make breast and gynecologic cancers a thing of the past. And that's why Rob (*gimp) and I are walking again this year! And once again, we need your support.

Whether you would consider donating to support us, to memorialize a lost loved one, to create a better future for the next generations, or for another personal reason, the end result is the same: getting us closer to a brighter future without the fear of cancer.

Many of you know how personal this fight is for me and I know that many of you share similar stories.  This is why I continue, year after year, to walk the 60kms to find an end to this dreadful disease.  I walk for my mother and my grandmother. I walk for your mothers, wives, sisters, nieces, daughters, grand-daughters and friends. I've walked 600 kilometers to see an end to cancer in my lifetime - support me and help me walk 60km more. Rob and I must raise $2000 each to participate and we're counting on your support to reach our goal.

Please click below to donate to either or both of us.

Gallery Makeover Project

Fri Mar 8, 2013, 7:25 AM
Hello everyone :)

Recently my team and I worked tirelessly on a project to help improve the gallery descriptions and thumbnail examples.  While that project was indeed tedious with almost 4,000 categories in our system, it was also educational.  What I learned from sorting through thousands and thousands of categories was that we have a lot of redundancy and a lot of categories that seem to have been created on a whim that are now simply homes for junk.

Over the years, the desire to appease niche communities and people who just wanted a specific area has led to some categories that go up to 4 levels deep, and it's really no wonder it's so confusing for people to figure out where to submit their artwork.

The conclusion I've come to is simplicity.  While I'm not about to rip apart everything and make 6 stand alone categories, I do believe that there is a lot we can do to simplify the category tree.  That includes some of the following:

1. Merging categories that make sense.  For example, Digital Drawings is now merged with Digital Paintings creating one Digital Drawings & Paintings category.  The Digital Art > Drawings subcategories will be merged with the existing Digital Paintings subcategories and you don't need to do anything.  Right now a gallery pointer is in place but we will move all of that content into the appropriate place.  The reasoning is pretty simple, the difference between Digital Drawing and painting is not something that is so discernable it requires a separate category.  In fact if you browsed through either they were a mixture regardless because people themselves didn't get the difference.  This Digital Drawing/Painting merge will be something that will occur in all Digital Media galleries over time.

2. "Other" categories.  Recently all 'miscellaneous' categories were renamed to "other" because the term Miscellaneous seemed to imply that anything under the sun could go there.  In some instances the "other" category has been removed.  For exampled: Digital Art > Other has been closed to submission.  The artwork there will be moved to appropriate digital art categories so do not panic :) However, to really emphasize the absurdity of some categories.. The Digital Art > Other category had 18 subcategories.  There was even a Digital Art > Other > Other.. WHAT?  I appreciate that there was an animations gallery that accepted gifs that will be moved to the main Digital Art category so it will be Digital Art > Animations.  Animations of that sort will also be permitted in Mixed Media > Other and Drawings & Paintings > Other, once a fix has gone in.

3. Retiring outdated categories.  Some categories served a purpose years ago but since then have died out or, for example, in Customizations, perhaps the system or program doesn't exist anymore.  Retiring a category will mean that there is a sufficient enough of accurate submissions to leave the gallery browsable for historical reasons but it will be closed to further submission to avoid having it littered with misplaced deviations.

4. Removing dead categories.  Some categories never took off and there's not even one valid entry in it.  These will be removed from browse and submit and you likely won't even notice ;)

After reading all of this I ask you not to panic. Over the next few weeks, volunteers from specific niche communities with categories we believe can use some simplifying will be reaching out to their communities for feedback and thoughts.  If you are interested in helping with this process, please ensure you are watching #communityrelations and the volunteer associated with the gallery you want to contribute your thoughts to.  Nothing about this project is malicious and the cooperation and feedback from the community is very important to me :)  It's possible that many galleries won't be touched at all but I truly believe that if we have the ability to simplify a structure, it's within our best interest to do so.  The 4 level deep galleries of the past are archaic and difficult to navigate, even for the veteran deviant and it helps contribute to people just dumping artwork in the first category they can find because it's too taxing to bother to find the right one.  Should you decide to provide input during this project, I want you to try to imagine yourself as a new deviant, and if you can get that far, try to imagine yourself as one that doesn't speak English as a first language.. and you'll see the nest of insanity in a whole new light :D

This isn't going to happen overnight, and like I said earlier, it may not affect you at all but it is the direction I'm going in and I hope you join me on this crazy journey! It's going to be quite the adventure

1. New Submission Process and Thumbnail Examples

In my opinion, one of the greatest advantages to the New Submission Process, are the thumbnail examples and descriptions that appear when you're selecting a category.  It's no secret that we have misplaced deviations throughout the galleries and it's probably the most complained about topic I deal with on a daily basis. My team and I have been working hard to improve the descriptions and thumbnail examples for all of the galleries, and I'm happy to report that, we will have completed this project by the end of this week.  It was no small accomplishment and I want to extend a huge wave of gratitude to those volunteers that helped out and also to those community members that helped to point out issues they spotted while submitting.  It was very much a team effort! That being said, with thousands of galleries, it's possible something got missed, so if you notice anything that looks awkward or concerning, please reach out to me and let me know.

2. New Galleries and Gallery Additions or Change Requests

While I've been working on the gallery descriptions and thumbnails, a variety of clean-up actions have occurred as well and I've been merging and removing old and unused categories.  I have also been taking care of some needed additions, which you can read about below.  Going forward, please request any changes or additions in this new forum thread which will be monitored regularly :)

There are hundreds of people that express interest every time there is an opening and I'm often asked why people don't get replies to their requests or why someone was chosen over someone else. It saddens me when someone notes me asking me why they aren't good enough.

This is really the wrong way to look at things. These decisions are not easy for me to make and I weigh them based on many factors, including (but not restricted to) time on deviantART, activity in the community, suitability to the team, understanding of the gallery of choice, fit with the current team members etc.

Not being chosen doesn't mean you're lacking, it just wasn't meant to be at this time. There are many ways to get involved with the community that don't require a symbol and I suggest that if you're serious about volunteering, you start by getting acquainted with the current volunteer team and getting involved with the community. The community, staff and volunteers are all responsible for making deviantART the powerhouse of awesome that it is

Yoda by $Moonbeam13

Yesterday, Rob and I lost a beloved member of our family, our cat Yoda. To say we are heart broken is an understatement. He was incredibly unique and such a part of our lives that nothing seems normal right now without him begging to play fetch or crawling up to snuggle and I find the house incredibly quiet without his constant purring.

There is no logic to what happened. He was himself on Sunday and by Monday night, he was overly lethargic and we knew something was wrong. Tuesday morning I took him into the vet and they concluded that it appeared that his bladder was rupturing but the cause of that was unknown. His body had already gone into shock, and he was in pain. There were no answers for the why, but after our horrific experience with Merlin, we vowed never to put another cat through that and made the heart wrenching decision to let him go. While the vet agreed with our decision and told us that there was nothing we did or didn't do that caused this, it doesn't seem to numb the pain.

We had him for four amazing and loving years, but it was not nearly long enough. Anyone who has met him will tell you that he was one of a kind, I have never known a cat with so much personality.  We were truly blessed.

To say the decision is difficult is an understatement.  Whether you're speaking of a pet or a person, trying to logically figure out if you're fighting to keep them for their sake or yours, is a difficult line to establish.

Logically, I know he's not in pain anymore.  He was far too amazing and shouldn't have experienced pain so for that I'm thankful.  In my imagination, he's eating glorious amounts of food and rolling in a mountain of catnip. In my heart, he will live forever.

1. Happy Holidays and Merry New Year

As the old year begins to fade into the sunset, it is customary to reflect on the passing year and make plans for the upcoming one.  Some do this in the form of resolutions, some people make action plans, some people just swing into the new year the same way they swung out of the old one :) Whatever way you intend to welcome in 2013, I hope you're surrounded by love and that you do it safely!

I've been reflecting on the year and like many, with some focus on the unimaginable events of the last few weeks. Specifically, the shooting in Newtown.  I know that it's "human nature" to want to find answers but I find the media coverage to be brutal.  Let's be honest, we could have the attackers themselves explain the 'why' and it still wouldn't make sense.  You can't make sense of the senseless.

Regardless, I wept when I heard of these events and I believe I'm not alone. The sorrow was felt around the world and I'm sure the new year will bring on many gun debates and discussions, some of which have already started.  I'm not here to talk about gun laws and policies, I want to talk about the power of community and being better humans.

In the wake of the events, Ann Curry of NBC News wrote:

Newtown's heartbreak has a lot of us asking, "What can I do?" Thinking about this, I took to Twitter and asked people to imagine what would happen if all of us committed to 20 acts of kindness to honor each child lost in Newtown. I added, "I'm in. If you are, RT #20Acts."
Tens of thousands of people on Twitter and Facebook not only seized the idea, they increased it to #26Acts, to include the heroic teachers, and are launching acts of kindness big and small all over America. The acts are spreading overseas, including one tweeted from Borneo.

Certainly the idea of Random Acts of Kindness and Paying it Forward are not new notions but ones we need to be reminded of.  The deviantART community is especially amazing at things like this.  From the simple acts of participating in the community to critiquing or collecting someone's artwork.  From buying someone a premium membership to donating to someone's cause.  I'm always wowed by the lengths members of the community are willing to go for, all intents and purposes, complete strangers.

Throughout the year, we upset each other, we get angry at each other and feel like we just aren't being listened to.  Whether it's members of the community, staff, volunteers or senior members - we've all found ourselves feeling like we're on the opposite side of the fence. What I have come to realize over the years is that the main motivator for how voracious these 'debates' can be, is our shared love of the deviantART community.  We may not always agree on the ways to care and nurture for it but we are all coming from a place of love and protection for something we hold dear.

That's a great realization but what do we do about it? Well there's no one answer or I'd have suggested it years ago :D but what I can tell you is what I'm going to do.  First, I totally participated in #26acts and I plan on continuing to participate in working in random acts of kindness into my days going forward.  I'm going to learn to be a better listener, I tend to multi-task and I'm not going to do that when someone is trying to talk to me.  I'm also going to practice forgiveness.  I am not infallible and let's be honest, carrying around a grudge is exhausting. I'm also going to try to be more patient - this one is going to be a challenge :D It's time to start over, rebuild and renew :) I have placed my 'resolutions' for you all to see so that you will help hold me accountable and hopefully join me

I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below about how you think we can improve the 'community' in the deviantART community.  What would you like to see more of? Less of? Do you have any resolutions, if so what are they?

I wish you a safe and blessed holiday and hope you're spending it with people you love. I look forward to spending an amazing 2013 with you all.

Merry Yule

MAMA Scared Stiff Contest

Thu Dec 6, 2012, 5:00 PM

Guillermo del Toro presents MAMA, a supernatural thriller that tells the haunting tale of two little girls who disappeared into the woods the day that their parents were killed. Now, the MAMA filmmakers in conjunction with deviantART invite you to bring your scariest childhood memory to life! Is it under the bed? Or perhaps lurking in the closet, attic or basement? Use your imagination and create a visual depiction of your most frightening apparition.

MAMA filmmakers Andy & Barbara Muschietti and Guillermo del Toro will be judging your ability to create your very own childhood terror! Enter now! If you dare...

Love the Stache!

Hi everyone :)

Movember is quickly coming to a close and the shave-off events are eagerly awaited by our Mo'Bros who have suffered through all sorts of mo-mishaps over the last 28 days.  For those of you that have participated, I thank you and ask you to make the last two days really count and reach out to your friends and families for those last minute donations.

For the rest of you, I am making this final push on behalf of all of the deviantART Sta.sh teams to request that you reach into your pockets and make a donation, regardless of how big or small, to the Movember effort.  I realize how hard this may be considering you're likely broke after Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but should you find a dollar or two - we would greatly appreciate your donation :please:

The amount isn’t important, every little bit helps Movember continue its funding of world-class programs.  If you want to know more about what you’ll be helping to fund, you can visit this link

Please note that donations can be made by credit card and paypal and a tax receipt will be issued!

We have four teams that you can donate to:

:iconstacheplz: The DeviantART Sta.sh U.S. Team

:iconstacheplz: The DeviantART Sta.sh Canadian Team

:iconstacheplz: The DeviantART Sta.sh Australia Team

:iconstacheplz: The DeviantART Sta.sh Mexico team

The reasons for the poor state of men’s health in the US and around the world are numerous and complex, primarily due to a lack of awareness of the health issues men face. This can largely be attributed to the reluctance of men to openly discussing the subject due to longstanding traditions, coupled with an ‘it’ll be alright’ attitude. Men are less likely to schedule doctor appointments when they feel ill or for an annual physical, thereby denying themselves the chance of early detection and effective treatment of common diseases.

Studies show that many men don’t get regular health checks for the following reasons:

  • Fear it will lead to a hospital visit
  • Embarrassed to discuss their health issues
  • Find it too hard to see a doctor because they just can’t fit it into their schedule
  • Just can’t be bothered making an appointment

To this end; Women, friends, family - let's join forces to enable the men in our life to get to the doctor and to talk about the uncomfortable topics.  I encourage everyone to nag their husbands, their boyfriends, fathers, brothers, and sons because you care.  You care enough to bother.

To highlight the importance of what I am doing, take a look at these statistics:

•    1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime

•    This year 242,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed

•    This year 8,290 men will be diagnosed with testicular cancer

To inspire you, here are some progress shots of *gimp's Mo!

Thank you for your consideration!

Mo' Love  :manhug:

Two Chapters Left!

Wed Nov 28, 2012, 9:16 AM
The prompt for Chapter 7 has been revealed:

Artists, Writers, Poets. Through artistry and words command and focus this intense narrative for the final two chapters of our story to be published next year. Best selling author *CliveBarker will continue to guide us through the final passages and incredible visuals as we head toward the end of our story. Join the Collaboration!
Is Paul’s final scream the sound of his soul being released?
Can he have an existence outside of his corporeal being, outside “nothingness?”
Or is this spectral plane the only reality to the trusted – the only viewing platform offering a truly objective view?

ONLY TWO(!!!) chapters left, and still we don’t know the possible parameters of the alien invasion. Obviously, in chapter 7, being the penultimate piece of storytelling, all consequences and secret alignments of forces must be revealed. And the set-up for the gut-grating, mind-mulching climax of the final chapter. Paul must be forced to put all his chips on “Maya” or “none of the above.”
So here we are at Chapter Seven of our story. Calling all storytelling individual geniuses! This is the final push before total revelation. This is the Odyssey’s siren call to Greatness.

There is still time to get involved and help carve out Paul's future! Illustrators we are still looking for incredible artwork to marry with the plot and poets, there is still time to make your contributions to the beginning, middle or end of the book poems.

It's not too late to get involved in the Odyssey and join us and *CliveBarker on this epic journey but time is running out quickly!  Watch #ODYSSEYPROJECT and start submitting your contributions now!

Get caught up in the Odyssey, here's the story thus far:

The Host With the MostPaul staggered out into the early morning fog like a drunkard.

He hunched into the raised lapels of this too-thin jacket and  wandered away from the hotel, disoriented, shivering--panic gnawing at his gut like a cannibal.  "I need help," he thought, "but where?"  The nearest hospital was the obvious answer, but the thought of what the doctors would do filled his mind with images of hospital beds with straps, extended isolation with no answers and needles piercing his flesh.

The mass on his thigh was growing--that was certain.  Paul could feel it writhing and pushing against his flesh as he walked.

Dreams of the DeepPaul's whole world was spinning.  The Proxitol made it incredibly difficult for him to think clearly. Maya? Yes, her name was Maya. She had told him it would only be a few days, that the thing inside would dissolve.  She'd been wrong, and she'd been surprised that she'd been wrong, not that it mattered. Resting his head against the cool porcelain of the toilet in the cell he called a room, Paul
could almost laugh about how this all seemed like some ridiculous dream. But the pain, the disorientation, and the feeling of...something inside...assured him it was anything but.

The growth had started spreading again, but it was different this tim

Techno-Colored PsychosisPaul's eyes came into focus just as Maya walked into the room, but something was different about her. Her face looked sunken and her eyes seemed glazed and black. The whole of the roomed looked as though it was changing color, flipping from one monochromatic scheme to a neon rainbow and back again. Paul began to pant and panic as she drew near him, he'd never been so terrified. He crawled away into the corner of the room, shivering, barely catching his breath, twisting his head back and forth as he flinched at every shadow.

“Paul? What's wro-” Maya 's jaw dropped at the sight of Paul's transformation.
