Triskaidekaphobia by Moonbeam13 Triskaidekaphobia by Moonbeam13
Triskaidekaphobia is fear of the number 13. It is usually considered a superstition.

It has been linked to the fact there were 13 people at the last supper of Christ, but it probably originated in medieval times. It has also been linked to that fact that a lunisolar calendar must have 13 months in some years, while the solar Gregorian calendar and lunar Islamic calendar always have 12 months in a year.

Triskaidekaphobia may have also affected the Vikings - it is believed that Loki in the Norse pantheon was the 13th god. This was later Christianised into saying that Satan was the 13th angel.

The Mesopotamian Code of Hammurabi (ca. 1686 BC) omits 13 in its numbered list. This seems to indicate a superstition existed long before the Christian era.

Your vision on this piece is simple and very sharp. It's actually pretty interesting because for me there's more then a number on this image, the symbology behind it is very strong.

Originality wise, I believe you did a good job, I mean, how can one be more original with a number that everyone knows and to play with darkness and fears, it's hard but this piece comes out pretty well in this department.

Technique is something I believe is always open to discution, I like what I see, I think you captured it really well and used the correct amount of dark in this picture, it really looks balanced out pretty well.

Impact is your strongest asset on this piece, just a big number and black one might say but again something about number 13... and darkness that makes this such a really good concept and piece to watch.

Two thumbs up from me.

When you turn thirteen and your life crumbles before you and everything changes.

You turn thirteen and love feels so different than how it felt when you were ten. Suddenly breakups are a big deal.

Turn thirteen, you REALLY start feeling like you want to die.

Turning thirteen can be really fun at times and seem easy.

... Unless you're me in which you had just gotten into a car crash the year before IN WHICH IT CAUSES YOU TO GET A MASSIVE CONCUSSION IN WHICH YOU CANNOT READ OR DRAW, WHICH ARE MY FAVORITE THINGS TO DO S- er... never mind...

Ah, yes the dreaded number 13 looming menacingly like some shady figure from an old Hitchcock thriller. I found your description to be quite enlightening. Most would take numbers for granted but it's good to see you pass on your numerical knowledge. :D

This looks great. I think the shots for your superstition series would make good book covers, like for this one... When a girl turns 13 she's raped or something. You know, like the classic teen angst novels, but I mean this in a good way. XD I am saying your photographs are so good, they would be wonderful book covers, OK?

I couldn't help but thinking of old crime movies when seeing this pic-- menacing and elegant! :D Once again, it's great getting to read some possible reasons behind these superstitions, super informative. :)

Triskaidekaphobia is one of the strangest phobias I've ever seen (aside from one of my sisters' phobias, which doesn't have a name: she has a powerful, inexplicable fear and revulsion to tiny (finger-sized) green bananas!)

I lived in China for several years - no fear of 13 in China - their common number phobia is, hands down, the number 4, which is considered ominous and bad luck. Just as we don't have 13th floors in many buildings, most Chinese hotels do not have 4th floors! Even there, it's explicable. Both the word and symbol for 4 in Chinese is similar to the word and symbol for death!

i must be full of bad luck, because my lucky numbers are four and thirteen. and i seem to have broken three mirrors

Its a new word and a new topic for me of superstition. I feel personally, things which we are fear of, by getting heard number of times again and again, only those things makes loss for us. If you ignore and have confidence on what you do, never matters whatever phobia is there. Also, someone who is a true follower of God never gets into any trouble. After all triskaidekaphobia is an phobia and not a truth.
