Triskaidekaphobia is fear of the number 13. It is usually considered a superstition.
It has been linked to the fact there were 13 people at the last supper of Christ, but it probably originated in medieval times. It has also been linked to that fact that a lunisolar calendar must have 13 months in some years, while the solar Gregorian calendar and lunar Islamic calendar always have 12 months in a year. Triskaidekaphobia may have also affected the Vikings - it is believed that Loki in the Norse pantheon was the 13th god. This was later Christianised into saying that Satan was the 13th angel. The Mesopotamian Code of Hammurabi (ca. 1686 BC) omits 13 in its numbered list. This seems to indicate a superstition existed long before the Christian era. Commentsomg that's awesome! you really conveyed the phobia part by making the numbers larger than life. very clever use of shadows too. i love it!

Lots of interesting factoids about this phobia which I find very interesting.... And how a baker's dozen is 13, but that came from a funky wives tale that ended up springing forth in fruition. I can not remember it completely, or maybe I am just too damn tired, but it was something to the effect that higher middle class or upper class would have a lower class maid/gofer whatever they were called then to go to the bakery and get the pastry goods for the day. The baker would not give this maid/gofer a free pastry, even though she emplored with the baker on how they would eat all of the pastries when she got back. I think somewhere in there she had not eaten in a while and she was starving...man I really should come back to this when I am more awake. But anyways for entertianment value, the baker did not give her the pastry and she left. As she left she placed a curse on the baker, bad stuff must have obviously happened to the guy because word got around about the curse and all the bakers in town chose to make a "baker's dozen" which is 13 pastries and not twelve. If that is totally wrong, then please just get a good laugh from it, I know I will laugh at this later when i come back to give a proper comment. -- My Prints Houston Artists I am the Yao Ming of Hobbits. well...look who's still blowing minds with her work!
this is so cool...i just had a long convo with my g-friend about how i used to be superstitious of 13 because of the brainwashing that they instill during elementary school...but from my late teens on i've grown to love 13 and it's mystique! oh...and... -- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~ "I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." --Kurt Cobain member of: ~canada-club ~ bassists ~Guitarmads ~toronto ~Not-So-Silent superb! And thank you for adding the li'l factoids...it's a marvelous title for a fantastically realized concept--the numbers positively LOOM!
Of course, it's always been a lucky number for me, having been born on the 13th (that, and Loki is my spirit guide, Go Lucky 13! -- I think global warming is... How deviant are you? |
