Introducing loish

:iconloish:

My name is Lois van Baarle and I joined DeviantArt when I was just starting out with digital art, in 2003 - 13 years ago! I’ve always been really passionate about drawing digitally and also sharing my work and getting to know other artists. That’s why DeviantArt has always been so important to me. It’s been a way for me to find inspiration, learn new techniques, and get in touch with other artists.

My art is digital, and my main focus is on getting my art to show a lot of emotion. I try to do this through color use and by using nature, lighting and surreal imagery to give the drawing a poetic feel. I usually don’t have much of a backstory to the images, which makes it so amazing when people comment with their interpretations of my images - not only does it inspire me but it also shows that my work resonates with others.

When I joined DeviantArt, I was a 17 year old who drew as a hobby… over time, I went to animation school, started work as a freelancer, and now do character design work. This year, I released my first artbook, and my creative choices for that book were based on feedback I got here on DeviantArt! Even though my life has changed so much since 2003, this community still means so incredibly much to me. Thanks so much for all of the support and inspiration!

If you’ve visited DeviantArt in the last decade years, chances are good that you’ve seen Loish’s artwork. Loish has been an inspirational member of the DeviantArt community for 13 years, during which she has become one of the most recognizable artists on the site. Her signature style is varied yet distinct, as she features women of different sizes, shapes, and colors in her artwork. And true to her cause of inspiring artists of all skill levels, her older deviations prove her dedication to the arts, displaying the types of extravagant improvements one can make over 13 years of practicing and perfecting one’s style. Soaking up feedback and tips from her fellow deviants, Loish was able to sharpen her digital painting abilities and turn her into the artist she is today.

In addition to her tremendous artistry, Loish is a source of light for the community as well. Eager to maintain an open dialogue with her watchers, Loish has helped many other artists grow and develop their styles with encouragement and support. And by providing valuable resources to the community in the form of brush sets and tutorials, she has guaranteed the growth of her fellow deviants.

Community Quotes

loish has captured many deviants hearts with her captivating sense of visual language! Her gallery is full of beautiful colours and content that really draw you in. Her works are so recognisable. She is very influential and inspires a lot of artists who are just starting out! She also engages with the community well and has a great relationship with her watchers!”

I have admired loish since my earliest years on DeviantArt – and rightly so. Lois is well known, amiable and respected amongst the many facets of this community. Her gorgeous art style is also highly distinctive and vibrant. Her talents are far reaching and each breathtaking deviation speaks for itself. She engages the community in an easygoing manner, drawing in old and new artists alike. She also frequently goes out of her way to help other artists improve while continuing to polish her craft. She is undeniably someone truly worth admiring – helping to make DeviantArt home for several talented artists – including me. I offer you a heartfelt congratulations, loish your deviousness is well earned!”

The question “Who is your favourite DA artist?” is pretty common around the site, people ask this in their journals and forums… and whenever I come across this question a couple of deviants come to my mind every single time. One of them is loish I still remember the time when I participated in an interview with her in the DA chat some years ago and told her I wanted to have her babies. She laughed at me. It was awesome. Lois is, I think, one of the most influential artist in her field not only on DeviantArt, but in general. I think many of us can say her work has influenced ours in some way, be for her bold use of colors, forms and textures or her defiance to contemporary beauty standards, her character designs and visual concepts are always full not only of aesthetic and beauty, every image is so rich in intrigue and unwritten words, you can imagine a whole story looking at a single image of hers. So happy to know Lois is receiving such a recognition, well deserved!”

It’s been a pleasure following loish’s work and watching it evolve over time - a reminder that there’s no point at which an artist stops developing.”

I don’t exactly remember how exactly found out about loish but I am mostly certain it was while browsing DA (categories, favourites) and recommendations and conversations around DA while I was new on here. It was like a ritualistic obligation to know of her and sprinkle around her name for amazing artworks on DA and what not. It seems overused to say the least, but loish’s artworks are gorgeous. Even though her works aren’t labelled as such, but it gives off that ‘Art Nouveau’ (specially Alphonse Mucha and Gustav Klimt) feeling on a fair share of the works when I view them. The characters are full of life and personality on her work and the overall mood she can portray is dynamic and quite inspiriting to see. It also makes it quite nice to recognize her works when browsing around DA. Not only that, she also shares a variety of resources and processes, which is of great help and inspiration for beginner and intermediate artists! She takes inspiration from a lot of sources, and it’s such an important feature to be versatile enough to accept and gather information from various ways for beginners to learn and continue to develop their style, that I admire her for being someone I was introduced to when starting out on DA. I am never not amazed when seeing her continuous improvements from where she was to where she is now, and continuing to inspire others! She is so amazing I thought she already had a Deviousness Award from when I was new here. Now, as a once upon a time a new deviant it’s such a pleasure to write a wall of text on her being awarded the Deviousness Award! Congratulations!!”

loish has always been an inspiration to many people. I started following her art many years ago, back when she was drawing the sweetest Disney princesses, and she has never lost the charm she manages to capture in her pieces. She has always been open and honest, with both herself and her fans, and it has been wonderful to watch her artistic journey. I can’t wait to see what new projects she comes up with!”

Throughout the years DeviantArt has been an incredible place to meet artists,to get to know the vision behind their proposals and know the evolution of the works as well as artists. In the case of loish, whom I met thanks to friends who did not stop to recommend that I should take a look at her work, observing this evolution has not only been to see how she grows technically as an artist, obtaining a wide and varied record, but also her expressive range grows, achieving what few artists can: Get a solid style, without giving up the experimentation of texture, color, composition and the artístical search in general. I’m really happy, not only because I’ma fan of her work, but also because this is an acknowledgment to an artist who not only surprises and delights us, to the many that follow her work, but also is those wonderful cases, where we see how the evolution of a colleague inspires us to improve. Congratulations loish!”

loish has the special ability to transport us into a world of inspiration!!! Her illustrations have a lot of charm and both her recognizable style and her amazing use of color, make her digital painting skills ‘Out-of-this-World’ to many of her 210,000 watchers!!! She’s able to tell beautiful stories in every and each one of her creations. I know without a doubt that if I’m in need of food for the soul, I can go to her page at any moment and find her work right there, for all of us to contemplate and admire!!! I could not be any happier knowing that our beloved loish is getting this award today!!! Congratulations my dear, you’re absolutely amazing!”

Congratulations to loish!

Introducing pearwood

:iconpearwood:

Greetings! I’m Steve, or pearwood if you prefer. I joined DA in January 2005 as a young thing of 54. Now I’m 66 and, as the sign says, not leaving DAuntil hell freezes over. I followed a pack of artist friends on their migration here from Lothlorien/Elfwood. I wanted to be able to comment on their work from my own account. As a lowly non-fantasy-artist, could not get an account on Elfwood, so I came here.

Commenting is what brought me to DA. The giving and receiving of comments is what has kept me here. It happened like this. I decided to post a few of my canoeing photos to show folks what I was doing. I found, to my surprise, that I could hold my own. Katie rakastajatar and Dan themobius / ImpressionofLight and others encouraged me and helped me with critique. Katie and Dan challenged me try shooting in black and white. Several cameras and a lot of black and white photography later, I’m still here.

I have fun with my photography, especially now that I’ve gone back to film and classic, manual cameras. (I’ve been making my living with computers and networks for the past three decades plus; no-batteries-included cameras are my rebellion and sanity.) Other folks appear to enjoy my photographs, which is very cool. I’ve picked up a couple DDs and even sold a print or two.

What has brought me the greatest joy has been getting to know other artists all over the world and, especially, watching and encouraging young artists as they grew up and deepened in their personal and artistic beauty. Some of them are now professional artists and writers, others are dedicated amateurs like I. Some are still active here, others have moved elsewhere. Some have started raising families of their own and haven’t the time and energy to be active artists. That’s all just fine.

Several years ago I picked up existentialdefiance’ practice of doing "One" features, highlighting one work by one artist. As Queen-Kitty does with her "15 under 15" features, mine typically feature lesser-known deviants. I enjoy featuring other artists. The last two years or so I’ve been helping run CRPhotography’s 52 Week Photography Challenge. It has been a good way for me to grow as a thoughtful photographer and help others do likewise.

Their is a certain consistency to all this. Some Christians select a "life verse" from the Bible that sums up what they hope to accomplish during their time on God’s good earth. Others find a particular verse thrust upon them. What was thrust upon me was not a verse from the Bible but the prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi.

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.Where there is hatred, let me sow love;where there is injury, pardon;where there is doubt, faith;where there is despair, hope;where there is darkness, light;where there is sadness, joy.O Divine Master, let me not so much seekto be consoled as to console;to be understood as to understand;to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive;it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Soli Deo gloria

pearwood is a beacon of positivity in the photography community - always cheerful, always helping everyone out with advice and critique when they want it, and he seems to be the first person to comment on every photograph submitted to DA! On top of this, in his groups like CRPhotography he is never afraid to do the dirty work to get a project launched. Congrats Steve on your well-deserved award! Now your user symbol will match your age :D

I’m so thrilled that Steve has been picked for Deviousness this month. He is an unwavering example of support and friendliness within the photography community and beyond. He is quick to assist in community projects while giving friendly encouragement for others to do the same and has provided so much assistance to photographers in his community during his time on DA. The community is absolutely lucky to have him here and I personally hope he sticks around for many more years to come! Congrats, Steve!”

Congrats Steven!! I have been an admirer of your work and overall community presence for a long time. Steven is a master at film photography as is evident through his fantastic gallery. He has a knack for turning every day situations and scenes into dramatic visual stories. I have had the pleasure of working alongside Steven at CRPhotography and he is instrumental in making the site’s community what it is today! This award is much deserved!!!”

Steve is a great fella. He’s very active and supportive to the community, and he has a wonderful appreciation for life and nature. He does a lot of great things with old methods, using film and analog cameras in this digital age. His work gives you the understanding that art can be found in everything, as long as you open your mind to see it. A well-deserved bit of recognition for a great guy and a good shooter.”

I’ve written about other Deviousness award winners, before, but this is the first time I’ve had the opportunity to write about someone I’ve actually met. Steve, first off, is a very nice person. And I think that disposition is reflected in his photography.

I’ve also seen him in action. He’s an old-school photographer. He sees the shot before he takes it, and is skilled enough to get it right.

I like the variety of subjects that he goes after. I might have a bias, here, as I usually do people and portraits, but I think he’s a good portrait photographer. This was the reason I started watching him in the first place. This award is well-deserved.”

Steven is an avid photographer, he brilliantly captures energy and warmth in both nature and in people, he is a kind-hearted person who wholly deserves this recognition, congratulations!”

Shortly after joining DeviantArt back in 2003, I blundered across the photographs of a deviant who uses the screen name of pearwood. I found a photographer who always seems to bring out the best of his subjects, be they landscapes, wildlife, or people, to share that wonderful “bestness” with us here on dA, or in that lovely gallery in New York State. He does the same thing with words, as well. He has a great sense of humor and the loving, giving, heart of a true teacher. Somewhere along the way, Steve became more than a long distance friend, and a bit like another, favorite, kid brother. I am quite sure that through the years he has acquired more of us who feel sort of that way about him; and only a few of us are here on line.”

Steve has been a supporter of my photography and an incredible friend since the beginning of my time here on deviantart. He has the kindest heart I have ever known and has never been anything other than a positive influence in my life and someone to be trusted. He continuously puts efforts into giving back to the community here, helping fellow photographers improve themselves or get noticed, encouraging us all through his thoughtful critiques and comments on our work. He has regularly helped projecteducate when we ran photography related weeks and is continuously saving my ass at CRPhotography by lending a helping hand. I cannot think of many people more deserving than him to receive this award. I will always cherish his friendship and look up to him as a superb photographer and member of this site. If you don’t know him already, go check out his page and trust that few are those who are kinder and more generous and supportive than him. Thanks for everything Steve!”

Steve is such a remarkable member of this community. If he isn’t creating and posting beautiful photographs, he is leaving thoughtful comments on artwork, featuring artists and helping run projects such as the 52 Week Photography Challenge to inspire photographers to go out and create.

Steve is a well-known advocate for traditional photography and has written helpful articles through projecteducate to help people get a foot through the door. He is a member of several groups that serve to provide educational resources and feature talented artists.

All of his DeviantArt specific activities aside, Steve is a wonderful person who strives to help anyone who needs help and will always lend an ear. His drive to enrich the community while still reaching out to help individual members is truly admirable and we are lucky to have him here! Congrats, Steve!”

pearwood is an incredibly active member of the community, he always seems to be around leaving kind, insightful comments as well as encouraging others to leave comments on the photos he features in his journal. And yet, he somehow still finds plenty of time to go out and take his own film photographs to contribute to the darkroom gallery. His kindness and willingness to help and share knowledge is a great asset to the community, and his enthusiasm is refreshing!”

Congratulations to pearwood!

Deviousness Award

Deviousness Award
It is not often we bestow deviousness upon someone who is already a member of staff, but sometimes you need to bend those rules when there are exceptions to the rule like $Moonbeam13. She has been heading up the crew of Gallery Directors as head of Artist Relations for going on a year now, listening to suggestions from the community, enacting her own ideas, getting input from the volunteers, and bringing you massively cool contests. And that’s just some of the things she gets done in a single day. It is with great pride and a huge vote of “thanks” that we give deviousness to $Moonbeam13 on the verge of our 6th Anniversary!

Hello dear Danielle,

Thank you very much for the points, but how can I do to donate them for CRphotography?
